So the Colorado DOW says this about hunting big game...

HANDGUNS
a. Barrel must be a minimum of 4 inches long.
b. Must use a minimum .24-caliber (6 mm) in diameter expanding bullet.
c. Shoulder stocks or attachments prohibited.
d. Must use a cartridge or load that produces minimum energy of 550-ft.- pounds at 50 yards as rated by manufacturer

Would a 6.5 Grendel AR Pistol fit this bill? Would part c not allow a sight/scope?

The Grendel should have right at 1k ft/lbs at 300 yards with a 123 grain projectile and a 10.5" barrel as shown in recent testing.

Surely no one would ever break the law and shoulder the arm brace to steady the "pistol" for a longer shot.

I would call up to the CPW office just to be sure
Absolutely worth a call. I had a buddy that hunted for years in CO with a scoped 44, but some DOW guys like to make life hard if you give them a reason to take interest in you. Also, make sure you know and obey whatever mag capacity restrictions. I hunt with a 300blk pistol in MO, it’s amazing how accurate ar pistols can be.

C does not exclude scopes. You’ll be fine with your Grendel pistol. The arm brace is a non issue as well because you can only use a handgun during rifle seasons.

Would it really matter? Handguns can only be used during the rifle portion of the season. So if you can hunt with and shoulder a rifle in the same season, what would it matter if you shouldered your "handgun"?

Because if it has a shoulder support it is legally a rifle, which must have @ least 16 inch barrel, max 4 rd. mag, be 26 in long or more, etc. OP's Grendel would be illegal if it had any shoulder support.

I would say that you're incorrect because the brace is not a shoulder support regardless of how one chooses to utilize it. Of course that has absolutely no bearing on the hunting regs. Pistol, rifle and shotgun are only allowed in rifle season. OP can use his toes to fire his grendel or one-hand a bolt gun...assuming he was proficient, it doesn't matter how he chooses to use the weapon, as they would each be a legal method of take.

After 5 calls to different areas within the state I got an answer...

AR Pistols are GTG as long as the caliber and energy requirements are met. Scopes are GTG as well.
