Wasn’t sure where to put this since I used my own reloads, from a rifle I built with components I picked up in the classifieds here to take a whitetail buck last week. Kind of a mouthful but I am pretty proud.
A couple years ago I picked up a Remington model seven 22-250 in the classifieds that came with a 300wsm barrel and a 260 rem barrel. I put the 300wsm barrel together as my first build and have been playing around with that doing some prep work for an elk hunt in the next few years. My next goal was to build the 260 rem for whitetails. I picked up a blueprinted action from PTG with a timney trigger last year along with a set of go/no go gauges. I got the headspace set and was able to pick up a stock from over on longrangehunting.com. Trying to keep this set up fairly light I opted for a SWFA 2.5-10 ultralight with the moa bdc reticle after reading all of the love for that brand on this site. Finally got everything put together and shot some factory rounds to get it on paper and gather some brass.
I wanted to work up a load for the 140gr accubond. I set up a load ladder of IMR4350 and hit the range. Worked up to near max and got 2661fps out of the 20” barrel and it is pretty steady under an inch as long as I let the barrel cool between shots.
Our rifle season starts mid November here in NY and I’ve been carrying this rifle every chance I get to go. Finally got an opportunity at a decent buck last week and took the shot at 234 yards and very hard quartering too, almost frontal. I tucked it in the base of the neck slightly off center and he dropped in his tracks. Impact velocity should have been about 2375fps or so. First time I have heard the bullet impact an animal. I found the bullet caught in the sinew of the spine after penetrating into the cavity and breaking the bottom of the spinal column. Retained weight of the bullet was 98.1 grains. Overall pretty happy with the 260 rem round and how this gun shoots. Lastly here’s some pics below.
