Im looking at getting a pair of han wag banks for hiking but no where to try them on around here. can you guys tell me if there boots run narrow? I can order either the regular or straight fit but have never had either on. for the record, I have a pair of assolo sassalongs that fit me great if that helps but not sure it correlates with anything.

also, thoughts about a every day hiker between hanwag banks and lowa renegade

I have a pair of Alverstone Wides. I would say they are a touch on the narrow side for a wide boot. I would never be able to use a pair of regular width. From what i have read most the euro brand boots are on the narrow side. I tried a pair of Scarpa boots for about 10 seconds. Those were as narrow as a pair of skis!

thats kinda what ive read. i just literally have no place to go try on quality boots

Hanwag runs on the narrow side. They do loosen up some as you break them in. I have a “ normal” width foot and I like the fit. The tatra light have a narrower toe box than the others.

I have both the Makra Light and Makra trek and the do seem a little more narrow in the toe box. I normally wear a 10.5 and went with an 11 in both. So far happy with them.

The answer is relative to your feet. The straight fit extra last used on the ancash is not narrow for example. They also sell most models in wide sizes. Measure your feet before ordering.

if you were choosing between lowa renegade and hanwag banks which one? and yes, i realize its an impossible question cause its based on your personal feet, im just looking for a rough guess at which is a better made boot

There is a good guide on GoHunt comparing fit of most boots. They use examples from their staff and make recommendations based on comparison to Nikes. I’ve found it pretty helpful even when not ordering from them.

Both are very well made I'd say I'd use a CC to buy both to try on and return what doesn't fit. FWIW, I have pretty wide feet and the hanwag Wide and straight fit extra both fit me

I have the makra combi and the alverstones. Love the alverstones since they are wide, the makras not so much. I’ve ran the alverstones for 3 seasons and they have been holding up great!

There is no such thing as a universal "Hanwag Fit" because each of their boots are built on different lasts. From my testing I can say the following:

Ancash II "straight extra" has a wide fit similar to my Lowa Tibet wide boots (I've worn both back-to-back). Length is similar. These fit my wide feet very well.

Tatra Top Wide GTX are very wide and have a higher-volume fit overall. Good for "caveman" feet with high instep and wide heel. Length runs about 1/4-1/2 size short.

Makra Trek SF Extra GTX have extra room for toes, but do not have a wide fit at the forefoot. Definitely narrower than the Ancash II.
