Halon vs Triax Questions

Let me start by saying I do not have a lot of experience with bows so please be thorough in explaining answers for a bow dummy.

I recently got "back" into shooting bows. I used to have a Matthew's Monster that I shot for a couple months then sold, which I recently bought back from a friend.

Put a set of arrows together and for the very little experience i have i would say i shoot it pretty decent. Anyway i recently shot my first animal with it and now I have an itch to get something newer.

My main reasoning is while the Monster seems to shoot well for me it is a bit of a tank. This isnt bad when taking one shot hunting if its windy but when I want to shoot all day when I'm off I get a bit fatigued holding the heavy bastatd haha.

Anyway I am currently looking at either a Halon or a Triax. It will mainly be used to hunt but I'll definitely shoot some league or 3D as work permits. I am waiting for my local shop to get a Triax to shoot but the Halon was oh so smooth.

I'd love to hear thoughts from you guys on things I may be overlooking or people who looked at the same bows.

I am 5'6", 26.5" draw(if I remember right), and currently shooting 55lbs.

So the things I am looking at right now comparing the two are the following:

Halon:
Bulkier
Smoother draw?(havent shot the triax)
Better suited for competition as well as hunting?

Triax:
Slightly faster(not a big concern for me)
Compact
Reviews boast about how quiet it is(big plus for hunting)

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I think you're overlooking their new 2019 flagship bow, the Vertix. I think their goal was to find a middle ground between the triax and halon in terms of ATA to appeal more to the western hunter. I shot it at my local shop and thought it was very smooth on the draw, and forgiving on the shot. 78#, 30" draw, 509gr arrow shot 294fps - pretty nice. I like the limb-stops on my prime though, so I wont be switching, but the Vertix was a pleasure to shoot.

I actually did shoot the vertix a tad at my local shop.

Ideally I'd like to shoot all of them side by side with my arrows at the same poundage I'm shooting now if they can set them all up.

I agree, a side by side would be nice. I replaced a first generation halon with my current prime, but if my memory serves me well, the vertix was smoother than my halon. Another perk of the vertix is their "switch weights" which allow for you to change your weights without messing with the limb bolts if you want to go to a heavier draw someday.

I didnt even notice the vertix had that same dampening technology thingy on it. Just saw it on a post from the local shop.

I guess it's going back in the lineup haha.

I have a Halon, buddy has a Vertix. I would just buy the Halon for the price difference. You're getting deep into the realm of diminishing returns, the Vertix is only marginally better in hand imo. Only thing is his has a newer rest mounting system that I am envious of.

I do really like that dovetail rest mount.

I've got a Halon and a Triax. They both shoot great, but I prefer the Triax because of the more compact size.

I shot the Halon 32 when first came out and loved how it shot. First Mathews bow that I have liked in along time since I have been a diehard Hoyt guy. I waited until the Triax came out to pull the trigger. I like the shorter and lighter Triax better. Both bows are very quiet, smooth drawing, and no viberation.

I ordered a Traverse the day before Thanksgiving and it’s just now coming in on the 15th. Shot the Triax, TX-5, Vertix, and Traverse. With your draw length, did you shoot the TX-5? I prefer a longer ATA bow - that’s why I ordered the 33” Traverse. Good luck!
