I had my Stainless 30-06 T3X cut to 19” and threaded 5/8x24 for my Dead Air Ti XC can but the gunsmith didn’t put a shoulder on it, it’s just threaded. Its worked fine, I’ve only shot it 15-20 times but no problem. Is there an issue not having a shoulder or reinforcing area? I’ve been reading other threads that say it’s needed on that barrel profile. I am kinda disliking the short ‘06 so rebarrelling wouldn’t hurt my feelings. I’d send it off for a 6 creed.

I would have a shoulder installed. ADCO and others can do this.

Best to have a shoulder. If you are not liking the ‘06 and want to change anyhow, makes sense to change now. Barrel swaps are pretty simple.

Defiantly needs a shoulder. Some gun smiths just shouldn't be working on guns. I had a 308 tikka threaded and the supressor would not thread on. The said they could fix it and when I got it back it was the worst looking thread job I have ever seen. I sent it into silencer central to be re cut and threaded. They were great

I've had to thread 1/2-28 on some of my 30 cal sporter barrels as I wanted the shoulder. Often times you could cut 5/8-24 but there is no meat left for a shoulder.

The kind that tells ya Dead air sucks, he said he wouldn’t be surprised if I had a strike cause they have unreliable tooling. Should have been my first clue. He got me, I’m a rookie - was my first.

I'm curious if the shortening down to 19" would put the threads in a portion of the barrel with enough wall thickness to put a shoulder on? Either way, personally no way I'd risk my $800 can plus $200 I paid for the stamp. One good smack to that thing out in the field and you might be getting baffle strikes.

If it snugs up and stays put without deforming the shoulder or your DT adapter, what's the problem?

I'm pretty sure Form has posted about doing the same with less shoulder than the OP.

What 2 parallel surfaces are mating up to one another? Genuinely curious.

Not adding a shoulder doesn't mean there is no shoulder but rather that it is smaller diameter than ideal. Should be 0.670-0.680 at that finish length IIRC. 5/8" = 0.625. Seekins barrels finish at 0.700" and they use 5/8" muzzle threads.

I've never used ADCO but they dont strike me as some garbage garage machinists that dont understand this stuff.

I don't think that's necessarily true in all cases. Guy could have just threaded without a relief cut. It would be nice to see a pic of the specimen to know for certain. Not claiming to be an expert here, just asking the questions.

I really doubt these guys are just making random 5/8" threads without a relief cut if they know it's for a suppressor. https://adcofirearms.com/products/gunsmithing/barrel-threading-gunsmithing/

Maybe they do shit work, i dont know, but I would have a real hard time seeing them doing that.

Edit @well_known_rokslider : well piss, stuck my foot in my mouth on that one! Now I want to see a picture @Swampcruiser

I tried to get my 16" Tikka threaded 5/8 ×24 here in Az. After calling 3 reputable smiths, that all advised against it, I went with 1/2 × 28" and an adapter. Other option was adding a shoulder, which I chose not to do because I was worried about OTB suppressor clearance, plus I think some are fugly.

I respect your admission! Now deliver us the pic @Swampcruiser !!

Should still have a face to index on when the threads end without a relief cut though?
