Looking for recommendations on a reputable gunsmith to rebarrel a browning X bolt. It was a gift from my father that I’ve had for several years. I cannot for the life of me get it to shoot a decent group with reloads now. (Never had this problem with any other gun). It’s a 7mm WSM with a lightweight barrel. I’ve wanted to get a threaded barrel so I can shoot it suppressed anyway. Does anyone have a good gunsmith that can replace the barrel? I’ve read numerous posts about where they are kind of tricky to get the barrels off without damaging the gun. I would appreciate it if anyone had recommendations on a gunsmith that is capable of this. Thank you.

Steve Boswell is fantastic. He’ll do it right. The best gunsmith Iv dealt with. Work quality, communication is 100%.

Kevin Weaver at

is just finishing rebarreling my A-Bolt.

He has a good reputation and was recommended on some other forums for work on Brownings and Mauser style actions.

I’ll have it back soon and can share more details about the process if you’d like.

Any update on this? I have an A Bolt project in the works and I'd love to hear what you had done.

Action is currently at OMR in Billings, MT having a 20” carbon barrel put on it. I purchased an OMR barrel for a 22 creedmor build and it’s a shooter.

I made a trip to Billings, MT last month and dropped it off in person. Family run business and very nice people. The owner spoke with me for quite some time and was nice enough to show me around the shop.

Hoping to have it back in a couple of weeks.

Nice! That sounds great. Looking forward to hearing about it when you get it in hand.

I have no doubts it will be a shooter. I’m more than happy with the OMR barrel on my 22 creedmor.

I’ll make sure to update back here once I get it back and get some rounds through it.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I did get my rifle back, and am working on mounting the scope. I installed a CB brake so I can use my CB mount Thunderbeast suppressor.

The rifle looks great. Just haven't shot it yet to know how well it will perform. Here's the build list from the invoice.

Here’s a few photos. I know what matters is the down range performance. I’ll get that info up asap.

I’m having to swap the medium modern sporting rings for lows.

I also tried low a-bolt rings and they were just a bit too short.

I also bought some factory Browning A-Bolt 375h&h mags off eBay. I had always heard they were compatible as a longer c.o.l. alternative for the 300WM.

With these, I can load to 3.60 length vs. the saami spec 3.340.

Kevin cut 1:9 twist to help with longer bullets.

The bottom mag is 180 gr Swift A-Frame bullets @ 3.340 in a factory 300WM mag vs. 210 grain Nosler accubond LR @ 3.60 in a 375 mag on the top.
