Browning X Bolt 2 speed, 24 in barrel chambered in 7mmPRC. I just ordered this gun, prioritizing elk and deer rifle. I have some questions if anyone’s familiar.

  1. What ammo have you guys been finding the most success with ?
  2. Are you guys running muzzle breaks like the Recoil Hawg? Do you recommend it?
Any info is appreciated

Cheers

I have a Seekins PH2 in 7PRC

It likes EDLm 180 and the TA 170’s
I’m utilizing it for a big game rifle so either round will work, but the TA gets the nod for Moose this fall.

I would avoid the EDLx as it’s become well known that those bullets are in no way bonded, and separate, which leads to loss of penetration.

Honestly try the Barnes Harvest with 180 TGK, that bullet is somewhat new and should shoot well.
Try and see what the rifle likes, deer will not know the difference, at all if you do your part.

Elk….. no idea, so I’ll not pretend to have experience, just because I read somewhere…….

I have the exact same rifle and caliber. After hunting with it all last season, and shooting it a lot, it’s become my favorite.

Mine came with the Recoil Hawg muzzle break. It greatly reduces the recoil. Enough so that I find it’s more enjoyable to shoot than my little 7mm-08. Folks biggest complaints about muzzle breaks are the noise. From the shooter’s ears, it doesn’t bother me. By standers might not care for it though.

As far as ammo, I went through a lot of factory ammo testing. Best groups (and consistent muzzle velocity) was with Federal Fusion Tipped and Federal ELD-X (both 175 grain). I had poorer results with lower grain weights. The Hornady offerings grouped far worse and the muzzle velocities measured were all over the board.

Can’t comment on elk, but the Axis and Whitetail bucks I shot all folded quickly with the above mentioned Federal ammo.

I’ve said similar things on brakes. I was wrong, they bothered me.

You can’t put the noise back in the barrel either once you touch one off.
