Headed to Gunnison mid July for 3 days. Plan on fly fishing. What is public access like in the area? Would I be better off hiring a guide service or is there enough water for diy? Don’t mind driving an hour to access a better area. Any advice is appreciated. Also any other recommendations on things do in the area.

Access is fine for the East, Gunnison, Ark, UNC, and Taylor.

A guided float would be worthwhile. The Ark and Gunnison are two of the rivers in Colorado that are experienced better on a boat. Especially the former.

UpRiver would be my choice for the Ark, and I think big horn canyon is a cool place
I think @bbrown might guide for Andrew.

I don't have a Gunnison recommendation from my own experience.

Used to work at Harmel’s on the Taylor in the summer and learned to fly fish there. Beautiful country and you can’t go wrong anywhere, but I’d get a guide just to make sure you get on a lot of fish.

If you can catch them when they’re open go for the MacDaddy pizza at Gunnison Pizza Co. Blackstock Bistro’s lamb chops are on point and they usually have Pappy Van Winkle on the shelf if you’re a bourbon drinker.

Ah man that reminds me the secret stash in CB too. That place was awesome

The taxidermy shop on the main drag has the best collection of trophy mule deer under roof! If I lived in gunnison, I would visit once a week until they ran me off!
