Hey guys,

My wife might be getting a job in the Curecanti National Rec Area close to Gunnison. Just wanted to see if there were any fellow Roksliders who live or have lived out there? I've done a bit of research and it seems like a cool area with lots of recreational opportunities. How are the locals around Gunnison area? How's the hunting and fishing? Cost of living? Do you see the place getting a mass expansion and succumbing to gentrification within the next decade or two?

I already know it can be one of the coldest areas in the lower 48 but that doesn't bother my wife and I. We both work in the Fisheries Biology field and this could lead to both of us working for the National Park Service in that area and making this our home for the rest of our lives. Any info you have on the place would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Lived there for 2.5 years. Housing can be expensive, and limited when school starts up. I literally drove around and found my place, it was never even in the paper.

Population is a mix. Lots of college kids. A couple of grocery stores. If you like to ski, bike, raft, hunt, fish it's a great place. But not the cheapest.

Lived there 1976-90. Worked NPS Curecanti 80-84, trail crew. Residential growth has been low there compared to bigger towns in CO. The university is a huge influence on the culture and economy, as is Crested Butte. For active outdoor people that don't mind possibly 8 months of badass winter, it would be heaven. Topnotch fishing and deer/elk hunting, a cool little town, great skiing/biking. Montrose is 60ish miles away for a little larger town. I really enjoyed my years there!
