On a guided hunt, would you bring your own camping gear?
I have booked a 2020 dall sheep hunt in Alaska, near Denali. The outfitter will provide the tent, cooking and camping gear, but would anyone bring their own equipment if you have it already?
If I bring my own tent and jet boil my total pack weight will be 40-45# (including gun & spotter, No Food) .

I'm honestly curious why you would want to? Maybe my own sleeping bag....maybe, but a tent and stove?

I'd save the weight and let the man you're paying provide.

I know you have to have a guide for dall if your not a resident but why would you pay for a guide, then use all your own gear? Show up and enjoy someone else worrying about all that stuff for you.

I would personally bring my own. Why you say. Well I'm really tall. A regular bag and tent would not be cool. I would have and have had long conversations with my guide about what exactly he is providing and if I should bring this or that. I'd rather have a comfortable productive hunt then gutting it out in something that doesn't work for me.

To summarize since I'm rambling along. Yes maybe. I have and will again.

I almost always bring my own equipment across the board. I am picky and want to use what and how I want. Although for that hunt I would coordinate on the shelter to be on the same page. That said I would listen to my guide or outfitter and their recommendations.

For that hunt, I would absolutely bring my own pad and bag to ensure comfort. I would assume the guide is handling the cooking, and the shelter would be a conversation. Wish I had to worry about it. Have a great hunt!

Planning on it this year. If I’m carrying it a 2lb duomid/bivy sounds better than a 4 lb dome tent.

"Near Denali" means Alaska Range. If you're hunting in the small preserve area to the west of the park that can get hairy for weather. Rain and Wind and such can flatten things. Across the river to the east of the park can be more mild weather wise but still wet.

Like several guys have said, I prefer to take my own gear that I am familiar with.

On backpack hunts I'm packing my Hillegberg Soulo. It doesn't weigh much and I know it's bombproof in the wind and bad weather.

Most outftters have good equipment but I'd hate to show up and find out they didn't!

Obviously if you ask some very specific questions you can probably alleviate any concerns but I like having a tent to myself and would rather pack the couple extra lbs.

Not a sheep or goat hunt... but

I once paid for an elk hunt drop camp with a canvas wall tent provided on site by the outfitter. THANK GOD, my brother brought his two man tent as well. It poured one night in camp and the canvas wall tent's roof leaked streams of water in multiple places .

It was so bad that we set the two man up inside the wall tent and slept in it.

Before leaving on the hunt, asked the outfitter if he had tarp for the tent roof. "You won't need it" was his reply...

Planning similar hunt for 2019. Ultimately decided to bring my own gear as you never know who slept in it last. You can show up in hill confident in your system vs. realizing quickly the provided gear isn’t same standard you may have.

If outfitter or agent doesn’t provide precise packing details, do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you everyone for the input. Like some of you said I want to know the tent and equipment that I have when the plane leaves. Also I would feel more prepared to spike out if need be.

Hunted AK range for Dalls and didn't bring my own. Regretted it greatly. Guide and I did not exactly get along. He was a fine person we just did not see eye to eye on things. With the weather we had a lot of tent time. I think it is safe to say it sucked for both of us.

Hunted for Dalls, moose and caribou in NWT. Brought my own tent. Defiantly the better way to go. I am positive the guide apprecitated it as well. When we first got to base camp, they go through your stuff to make sure you are not bringing too much or not enough. When I pulled the tent out of my pack, the Outfitter said "you brought your own? Your guide is going to love you." Toting the extra weight for 2 weeks was nothing compared to getting a little separation from each other.

Bring your own, always!

I’ve never been on a guided hunt and probably never will, but this right here sounds like some pretty solid advice.
