Guess who got Kentucky lucky??

CNichols - I drew the 2nd season bull tag too. Still deciding if I’m going DIY or guided.
I've got a friend going down with me, it's going to be diy but we may pay for the consulting giving its 14hrs from me and getting down there before hand is tough. I think we'll get down there once in august and then 2 days before the season

Hello guys, I'm new here. Congrats to those who got drawn for elk tags this year. I'm from Connecticut and was also lucky enough to draw a bull elk rifle tag 2nd week. I was hoping to get some help on unit and or regulated area selection. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you
PM me I got that tag a few years ago and can tell you the good and bad

Thanks for contacting me, seems to be tough to get some help. I wound up going with a semiguided hunt. It seemed to be the easiest way to get info and property. We'll still at least be out in the woods on our own.

These are some pics from last year. I drew a KY archery cow tag, and was successful DIY. I hunted the Prestonsburg Unit. The kill photo has my dad in the background as we prepare to butcher where she died on about a 45 degree slope!

I’ll second what @young7.3 said. Get a voucher property. I went with a friend who drew a cow archery tag last year, DIY and no voucher. It was pretty tough to find a place to hunt and the place I recommended had quite a few deer hunters and guys running dogs, etc. He was not successful.

@Warren1726 was that voucher property?

What units did you guys draw? I put in for five of the limited access areas but did not draw any. I got unit 5 for my hunt.

I'll be honest, elk hunting doesn't get my blood rushing like it used to, but a Ky elk hunt sounds really cool. congrats to all who drew.

I live in KY bout an hour from our elk country was able to hunt 2nd rifle bull last year buddy took a good 5 point we were diy hunting putting in the miles it’s still really hot and elk were not moving and not talking made for tough hunting trying to find them they stayed in the woods on benches in the shade all day u may catch them in a clearing really
Early morning or very last light. Our problem here in KY is there is no wilderness so a lot of this land is being hunted by rabbit hunters squirrel deer etc.. and people trail riding atv an utv all day that was our biggest problem we seen most activity Tuesday-Thursday the areas calm down some from all the weekend activity talk to all locals u can most people don’t like them as they tear up fences yards etc. our elk 10 years ago was a lot easier hunting they have now gotten smarter and spread out from being in huge herds. Good luck with your hunt scout as much as you can and put in the miles cover some ground your terrain will be fairly steep and thick brushy stuff most of property is all reclaimed strip mines that’s not been touched in years

O in a couple weeks I will head over and recon the area. I’m 4.5 hours away.
I have a visit to Mayo hospital for an ablation coming up. Once done with that I have to mend for a week or so and then I’ll head over and spend a few days in unit 5.

Netman, thank you for the info. I had an extensive phone call with Gary from grace elk outfitters and he was more than helpful as well. Sounds like we will be doing same type of hunt, congratulations on the tag and good luck.
My wife and I hunted with Gary a couple years ago. He is a great guy and his wife is a great cook. You'll enjoy it.

I was lucky enough to draw a cow tag, week 1. But then my luck ran out and I didn't get any of my unit choices. Does anyone have any intel on unit 5? Not much public land so I'm interested in leasing private if necessary.

I didn't get any of my choices and was given unit 5 as well. I'm cow elk week 1. You? I'm currently planning a scouting trip. Doesn't look like much public land.

Nice! My in-laws live in Kentucky, I put in for this too, but no luck sadly for me.

That's great to hear. I was drawn for unit 2 and decided semiguided was best bet for me. I'm driving down to meet gary and scout a bit this weekend.
