i will be headed to cass county area for some fishing and thought about throwing a few of my pups in and try my hand at grouse. I wondered if anyone has hunted that area as i have never chased grouse. Thanks for any advise and see rgs looks to have done some good things for habitat up there.

Don't have any info on the area but they are fun hunting for sure. I spend the majority of October hunting ruffs in northern WI in the AM and bowhunting PMs before rut hunting around home and chasing pheasants. Bring plenty of shells because you will need them. They will be frustrating to hunt but very fun. I don't know if MN has anything like WI on wolf kill areas but it is best to check and avoid those areas if all possible. You shouldn't have an issue as long as your dogs stay reasonably close to you. Running a bell is also nice to know where your dogs are. I run GPS on my GWP but she always has a bell also so I don't have to constantly be looking at the GPS. should be able to get into plenty of woodcock as well that time of year. Just remember you don't have all the time in the world on ruffs and woodcock. If you never hunted grouse before your first ruffed grouse flush will probably scare the hell out of you. When you hear them flush point and shoot if in a safe location. Good luck and have fun!

Almost any public land in Cass County will hold grouse and woodcock. Definitely bring the pooches. Concentrate around low/wet alder swamps and young aspen. Shoot quick! Good luck.
