Grand Canyon rim to rim

Back from our Rim 2 Rim to Rim last weekend. It went great and was actually very enjoyable. Everyone in our group did well and not at all the suffer fest I expected.

Crossed paths with the last of the three exo crew to do the full double R3 on his climb out - hard core!

What a cool place and incredible trail!

Here’s a little video my friend filmed and put together of the hike:

We ended up a bit under 17hrs from actual rim. Maybe 16.5hrs. We did check out ribbon falls on the way back and stopped for a dip in the Colorado as well. Otherwise we took no breaks except to fill water/bathroom/ and such tasks.

Very cool experience. It didn't look like any of your crew were over 200 lbs, fit looking group. What time did you guys start, how many calories did you consume? Was it mostly bars, goo and gel or did you bring any treats? How many liters of water did you carry on your person?

We started at about 4am and finished a bit before 9pm.

I brought about 4900 calories and consumed about 4000 or so. Some had less and some more but I would say everyone probably consumed in the 4000ish range. The food was largely carbs/sugars. I had a few heavier protein type bars to eat on the downhills/mellow bottom sections. Notable mentions: gummy bears, pb filled pretzels, pop tarts. I had a couple Gus but personally prefer other stuff. We all used at least some type of sugar added electrolytes some of the time as well (Skratch or Tailwind) and also low sugar stuff like Nuun tablets or salts tablets.

Everyone had about 4L water carrying capacity. For our hike there was water at the bottom and at Manzanita. We had pretty mild temps and mostly avoided the heat - the climb to the north was mid day and was the hottest part. I am not sure but I probably drank in the neighborhood of 10L-13L total. (1-2 on decent, 2 to manzanita, 3-4 north rim climb and decent, 1-2 manzanita to phantom, 2-3 climb out)

Wild - how many people were there at the start, would you guess? If you had to guess, how many went R2R2R and how many just went down and back?

There were a lot of headlamps going down around the time we started and we were passed by lots of runners. I would guess 100 people started down that morning. But after that the trails weren’t crowded and we kinda wondered where everyone went. I don’t think many were just going to the bottom, some had permits to camp on the north but I think the majority were doing the R3
