Grand Canyon rim to rim

What an awesome place to backpack. Never did the R2R but have self-support rafted the river twice with lots of great side hikes taken nearly every day. I remember it being 117 degrees at Phantom Ranch the last time we beached up there, but it was in June during a heatwave. I think it hit 125 a few days later on the river. May was much more enjoyable weather a few years prior.

We did hermit to bright angel. NPS designates your camp sites nightly. Hammocks would have worked at 2 of 5 in theory but I am not sure they are permitted. I say in theory because particularly at bright angel, they may assign you to a spot without the right trees, if they let you use them at all. No tents for us. We hung tarps tied to trees for shade during rest stops but slept cowboy at night. No issues at all.

We went there during Covid. I have zero interest in hiking it. too many people and rules.

More of a shitshow that Disneyland.

Heading out there with a couple buddies first of April. Plan on staying north rim then hiking back the next day. Looking forward to seeing this place.

It is my understanding that the north rim is closed until mid May. I think the roads are shut down so not even tent camping access. Double check withGCNP rangers to be sure

Tent camping is allowed from what I understand from them. Just no access via the road. Only hiking from the canyon.

When I did the R2R hike a few years ago, i ate supper at Phantom Ranch. There was a man in the group and it was his 80th birthday. He had been doing the R2R for decades. Everyone sang happy birthday to him. It was really cool having 30 strangers join in singing happy birthday to him

As others have said, if hammocks are allowed you run the risk of not getting a hammock friendly spot. Look into the Cabins at Phantom Ranch so you can carry more fishing gear and water... I wish I could have been at Phantom Ranch with Teddy back in the day. Spotted this ram and his lady friend on one of the last switch backs before crossing the river on the South Kaibab during Thanksgiving a couple of years ago. Such a special place especially when you get away from the crowds
