So I got a rino 750 for Christmas. Score! I also got an onx maps chip for it. I've had and still have onx maps on my phone, I like it but only when I have a blazing fast Internet and when it doesn't crash. I have grown to dislike it (app version) in the field. Now I thought the chip came with map layers (satellite imagery/topo etc.) like the app version but doesn't seem to. I pulled up basecamp on the PC and I get the same thing. A very basic topo with property boundaries for the most part. Do I have to buy birdseye? And does that carry over to the rino unit if I buy it? For a $100 chip it sure seems lacking. Am I missing something??? I am new to the GPS thing and I know there are many of you who have been using them for years, any guidance would be much appreciated.

Birdseye is a subscription.
If you're computer savvy you can hack the gps bios and that will open up the birdseye folder so you can add your own imagery. But then you need to go thru the steps to create the gps readable image file. If the area covered by the imagery is say a hunt unit size, TopoFusion may be of interest to you. That program downloads different map types to your laptop for offline use and you can send that map/imagery directly to the gps. Understand that there is a size limit on custom maps, 500 tiles I believe for the 600 and up series gps models.

Not to hijack, but if I buy the chip I still don't get satellite imagery? And have to buy it separately?

This is my experience, if the app and all its functions worked flawlessly like a GPS does it would be perfect IMO. But it seems that that you get better options with the app but with the GPS you get better functionality/consistency. If we could only marry the two!!!

Garmin sells an sd card that covers a single state with topo, sat imagery, and maybe private land. I think it's $79 or so. The imagery is from their Birdseye stuff so it may not be the best.

That sounds good, but I have no experience with the birdseye satellite imagery. I really like the onxmaps chip and the landowner info. I think the only thing lacking is a good topo layer and satellite imagery.

look at topofusion, it will send topo and imagery directly to your gps or onto an sd card. It may do what you want.
I don't see what the map tile limit is for that unit so I would try it first to see if it will cover your hunt area.

I'm listening... this sounds pretty cool. If I can get the topo/imagery as you say, and have the onxmaps overlay I'd be in heaven!
