So, I've lost my GPS (magellan explorist 310), and I need to replace it. I had the old Explorist before that, and liked it. Extremely basic, but it got a fix fast and worked great. I completely wore it out and had to get a new one. I hated the 310, as the buttons weren't all that easy to use, and the operation wasn't very intuitive. I'm not very techy, but I am capable and that thing aggravated me more than anything else. 99% of the time I use a paper map from mytopo in tandem with the GPS (I have a stack of these things), and intend to continue to do so. I always have a backup compass and am reasonably proficient with it. The reason I use the GPS is to get relatively exact positions in situations where the terrain is not familiar or there aren't good features to navigate by. For example, I'll be navigating in the dark in flooded timber during the the winter while waterfowl hunting and I'll be using it to find a particular spot in the mountains in the dark when I'm elk hunting. I don't care so much about downloadable maps, or roads in some city, or cameras on my receiver, or geocaching, or whatever. I just want to reliably be able to tell where I'm at and where I want to go. I've considered combining the receiver with a watch (Suunto, Garmin for eg), or just the wrist mounted type like a foretrex (looks a little clunky?), and I've considered the standard handheld like a Garmin Oregon...I don't mind spending some money on it (</= 500), but I don't want to pay for a bunch of features I won't use. Really like the idea of the Garmin Fenix, but wonder about battery life when I'm away from power for several days. I suppose I can charge it with my Goal Zero stuff...
Anyway, anybody have any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I have a DeLorme PN 40 that has been reliable. It's not fancy and doesn't have a touch screen. I actually like that. Because I would rather have buttons on my GPS. If you're getting tracks or coordinates from a website, getting them into your Delorme is a bit more difficult that doing it on a garmin. REI has the garmin GPSMAP62 on sale for $199. It is bomb proof and has a great antenna. Again, it is not a touch screen. You can use either while wearing gloves. Neither one "looks" as cool as the new models, but for hunting they are both great.

For basic functionality, I'd look at the Garmin Etrex series. I like them for simple and light. I believe you will find the handheld far easier to actually navigate with compared to a wrist GPS.

I've used a Delorme PN-40 (actually bought two of them), and both had mechanical reliability issues within a month. I might have been unlucky, but I wasn't inspired to buy more of them. Also the supporting computer software was clunky and difficult to use compared to Garmin Basecamp. Garmin is pretty much the defacto industry standard at this point, and for good reason.

Yk

Garmin 62ST or S. More features than the Oregon and I didn't like using the oregon at all. Especially in rain. If you get hunt maps those are the units they suggest. Hold lots of info and easy to use.

Exactly! Delorme software for your computer is difficult to use at best.

Dakota 20 for me had a Oregon 550 and 450 and the dakota 20 to test for awhile and chose the 20 I saw no difference in the three all extremely accurate. And when paired with gpshuntmaps its just awesome . The garmin 24 k is great as well . But the hunt maps are a league of there own! I wouldn't touch a Delorme tested the pn40 and it lost reception in the deep canyons in the cascades . Just my observations on the Delorme models !

I just bought a NIkon coolpix camera thats waterproof. $200 at Target. It has a GPS and a Compas with waypoints. I havent even taken it out of the box so i only know what the reviews tell me. its worth a look.

gonna give the 62s a shot. Looks like it'll do a lot more than I need it to, but it's the same price as the ones that do less, so we're gonna give it a whirl.

At that price how can you afford not to buy one....but I keep telling myself I can't afford to buy one. It seems to get good reviews so I think that's the GPS to buy and I would be right there with you buying one, but after a DT2 that I did plan on, and a sleeping bag that I didn't plan on(but the deal was so good I couldn't afford not to buy it), oh yeah, and a trip to Hawaii in March, I have to keep telling myself that no matter how great, no, screaming deal of a price that is on the Garmin, "you can't afford this right now, no matter how great the price".

You and I may have the same virus! My wife tells me I'm gonna save her into the poor house...
