Got scammed

The only real way to stop it is to have MFA. Scammers can get passwords in leaks(they happen all the time - and be honest, how many of you use the same password or close to it on multiple sites?), but chances are they’re not going to also have access to your text messages.

Ok

Just came from the bank
Full refund ...
Fraud is in fact covered while using a visa debit!!
My lesson learned. THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE ADVICE.

This brings up a valid point. Can you use a debit card on FF purchases? Anybody know how that works?

You should be able to.

Sending money on PP, unless it is a store transaction, is considered a cash advance by your credit card company(actual credit card, not a visa debit deal) and those usually incur a much higher interest rate.

PayPal wouldn’t help with a rifle stock. Most likely just get your account locked…

He sent PayPal Friends & Family using a Visa debit card so his dispute resolution will be through Visa...see below

That is exactly what OP did. You pay an additional fee to fund it from a card rather than your bank account but you get the protection from the card.

💯

There are a few additional Steps I take now even with feedback history. So far I haven’t gotten burned but it’s getting a little scary.
What extra steps do you take? I'm about to make a fairly large purchase on here.

Did you report that to a moderator? Or post it in the thread?

I think relaxing the rules in the classifieds to allow for some conversation would be a good thing. Maybe it's allowed, I know we can't comment on price, but when a member sees red flags they should be able to say something and should. If the seller is legit that shouldn't bother them.

I haven't been spending as much time in the classifieds as I once did, but think it's a shame it's being impacted to such a degree. It's been a great resource for me and I hope it can continue to be for others.
Report a guy for not responding to my DM's? No lol. I did post in the thread that I would buy it. He told me he sold locally instead.

I also posted in another Classified ad that is suspiciously cheap (see my post history) that I think is likely an active scam (SeanDC) as he also stopped responding when I asked for a video call.

Get a phone number and start a text conversation, google phone number

Reverse image search

Look at seller history and make sure he has recent AND consistent posts and there’s not a significant lapse in posts that would indicate an account that is inactive.

Look at recent sales and make sure they were completed

If there is any doubt, require a FaceTime of seller and product.

Thanks. Everything seems legit but I've never purchased off of here and I'm a little nervous with the amount of money.

I usualy know within 30 seconds of talking to them on the phone if they are full of shit or not. Ask very technical details about the product, something only a real user would know.

Then take extra measures like using google image search for the photo they used, FaceTime/video if needed.

If you're still skeptical after extra measures, JUST DON'T BUY IT. No piece of hunting gear is worth all this nonsense. Time is money.

I’m impressed folks are so optimistic that they won’t get scammed. In college I knew an international student from an eastern block country and he cheated, misrepresented himself, and outright lied every chance he had. When pressed about it, he explained corruption is not seen as a bad thing in his country, which seems to be not that far off base, and Americans are easy targets because they believe anything based on how convincing you look and sound. He was a good looking guy with very good English - if working for a corrupt governmental oil company didn’t work out, he is probably making good money running a ring of teenagers pretending to sell things online.
