Got a Chessie Pup

After nearly two decades breeding and training labs, I've moved into something totally new.

Meet Cane, the deadgrass Chesapeake Bay Retriever:

I live on the shores of the Chesapeake but I have never owned a CBR. Most of the ones around here are the darker, chestnut color but I have seen several dead grass as well. Good luck with your new hunting buddy !

Good luck w the pup. My father has had 8-10 chessies. Several were great dogs, others were complete idiots. I can remember two that were great companions as well as great hunting dogs.

I’ll see if I can find a good picture of Catfish. He was my dead grass brown Chesapeake. He retrieved thousands of ducks and geese. He was a wonderful friend. He’s been long gone but I still get misty eyed thinking about him.
Then I had Red. Red was a reddish colored Chesapeake. Red was a fantastic retriever with thousands of ducks brought to hand. Both dogs traveled all over the US with me chasing ducks and geese.
Both were very stout and fearless.
Chesapeakes and Airedales are the best.

I had three chessies in my youth:

PAL was a broad shouldered dark color great at retrieving but not all that friendly.
SMOKEY was a beautifully proportioned dead grass color and very protective of my boat or pickup.
HERPES was................he just wouldn't heel.

Hunted behind chessie before and there is no more hardcore, fearless, retrieving dog. My buddy has a female named Bay who made some remarkable retrieves and was a one owner dog! Good luck with the latest addition.

Well shoot. Since we’re reminiscing about old Chessies that have gone to the great duck blind in the sky, I thought I’d share.

This was the old mans last retrieve. It was a gimme but he didn’t care. A cripple on a small pond.

I am 64 yo and have had Chesapeakes my entire life. Don't expect to train him like a lab. Psycologicaly they are very soft.

Great looking pup. Miss my chesador, Jake. Great dog, nose like a hound, never cold in the iciest of water. Natural blind retriever. Just hard headed as could be and big ol balls - did not play well with other males. Cant wait to get another when i see pics like these.

Congrats???? Buckle Up....they're weird AF. You didn't ask for advice. But I caution you....I've had 3. For all the books and articles speaking about how Tough they are......pay attention to how SOFT they are.

Never had a dog sulk, pout and take shit so personal as a Chessie. They don't forget. They don't forget a beating. They don't forget a Heavy Hand.

And be ready for dog fights if you get a male.....

Lastly be ready for a Velcro dog. EVERYWHERE.

Thanks all. I am very familiar with the breed, and chose it precisely for its loyalty and aloofness.
It always seemed that when I was going to switch, something kept me with labs. Then two years ago my yellow female lab developed diabetes and passed. Trying to find an English yellow female under $3000 became an impossible task, and so the search shifted. Finding a Chessie still took some doing, but I ended up stumbling into one. He is incredibly intelligent, probably the the most out of all the pups I've had.

My older brother had a CBR when we were growing up. Loved that dog. Extremely friendly and a diehard hunter. He would dive under the water and come up with the bird downriver a long ways! Thought he drowned a few times but nope, up he pops with a bird that dived before he got to it for the retrieve. He would always find them somehow under the water. Craziest and most amazing thing I have ever seen in a bird dog.
