Thanks all. I am very familiar with the breed, and chose it precisely for its loyalty and aloofness.
It always seemed that when I was going to switch, something kept me with labs. Then two years ago my yellow female lab developed diabetes and passed. Trying to find an English yellow female under $3000 became an impossible task, and so the search shifted. Finding a Chessie still took some doing, but I ended up stumbling into one. He is incredibly intelligent, probably the the most out of all the pups I've had.
We are a year in on a chessie from labs. Our male is anything but aloof, but he is smart, has insane drive and is a lover. Good decision for us so far. We had one lab that I loved above all other dogs, but this chessie is something special and taking his place.. Good luck.

I loved my one Chessie Hunter, he was mostly grown when I rescued him, he turned into a major big water dog and loved diver hunting on the Niagara river. He wasn't as polished as any of my good labs were but his drive was there, he has been the only dog I've owned who could successfully fight the rolling waves of the Niagara. He broke on most retrieves and hatred to be handled but would do it begrudgingly. he had the typical Chessie smile but never did the water freak out stuff. My wife hated him in the house as his oily coat smelled horrible, and I think he liked being in my kennels between the girls better. He was a one person dog and that person was me, which I loved, my hunting partners not so much. if they tried to sit in my blind spot that low guttural growl would come out. good luck with your pup they are an interesting breed with dogs that develop real character

Great dogs. Nothing like a lab. My favorite dog. They can be real loyal and protective of family, something to watch

Not a pretentious lecture about the breed, just something I haven't ran into with my past chessies;

Ran into the law twice now with my current chessie; both times I was not there, it was just my wife/child/dog in the front yard when someone walked by. The dog knocked both guys down and left marks, didn't bite, got em with her claws, but enough to piss em off (rightfully so) enough to call the sheriff. If I am around, the dog won't even react to anyone walking by. She was easy to train, but my wife is not...

Congrats!! Tremendous animals. My was a hunting machine. Once saw him make about an 500 yard retrieve on a wounded goose and the goose bit him in the ass the whole way back. Dog would literally sit there and shake with anticipation of being commanded to retrieve. Great nose too - mine pulled many doves out of the middle of an uncut cornfield.

As awesome as they are, don't take how great he is around you and your family for granted. In my experience, the chessie that is not aloof or even potentially aggressive around strangers or other dogs is the exception. Watch their body language around strangers - tense, get control. We have a lot of chess in these parts.

Great dogs. Loved mine dearly.

I see you are coming from english labs, I've always had field trial labs from high performing lines which are known for being hot rods and this young chessie of mine just blows them out of the water as far as drive to work.

Speaking of ft did you see that 10 the series at the nrc yesterday it was meaty. You going to run that chessie in ft. I don’t think one has won a nfc yet could be the first.
