Going out west for the first time on a mule deer hunt in the Montana badlands mid November of next year. I’ll be bringing a pair of 400 and 800 gram hiking boots as from what I’ve gathered typical weather in that location and time of year can range from 10-50 degrees. I’ve read online that some people use liner socks and some just stick with a pair of merino socks. My feet run hot while moving so I was looking into the Darn Tough mid weight socks paired with the 2 boots I have. Open to any suggestions from personal experience as there’s lots out there.

Ive grown fond of liner socks no matter what temp. I feel like my feet get less hot spots since it minimizes friction. Thin liners on warm days, thick liners in the cold. If your moving a lot you may be better off with an uninslated boot. I wear uninsulated for most of the year and just adjust socks.

I use darn tough lightweight. The thicker socks cause too much movement leading to hot spots for me.

I don't wear insulated boots, my feet sweat too much. If Im going to be stationary for long periods of time, and I have room in the pack, I'll take my arctic shield boot blankets when it is really cold. For the past couple years I've been using a combk of Kennetreck liners with Darn Tough midweight boot socks. No problems, no hot spots.

Ive switched to Injini toe sock liners and a mid weight darn tough. Excellent moisture wicking, heat retention, and eliminates friction

If you're feet run hot, ditch the 800 grams, and maybe even the 400 grams. I've never worn over 400 grams deer hunting MT, and don't wear them often. I usually wear a midweight merino sock. Liner sock sometimes.

I recently used the Darn Tuff Heavy weight thigh high Hunting socks. I wore a light liner sock under them and they were great. I sat for several hours each day in temps in the low 20’s. Picked up a second pair when I got home.

What liner is everyone using? I run 0g boots as my feet run hot like the OPs. I feel a midweight darn tough with cushion is almost right, but a liner to wick may put it over the top.
