One other thing that I don't think anyone has mentioned is the space for a stove if you wanted one. Never been in an SL-3 but I would imagine it might be a bit more cramped with a stove. I was actually out playing with my SL-5 and new stove this evening.

After extensive research, on Luke's advice I got the SL-5.

I needed a shelter that was light weight, maximum space and as cheap as possible that could sleep 1-4 people, the SL-5 fit that better than anything else.

Ok. So in looking at it more. I can use just the netting or just the shell right? For just 1 or 2 guys wouldn't the big one be to big? Man I am thinking this might be the way to go. I am kinda like it better than the tent idea.

Nope it is perfect really, the sl5 is my solo/family shelter.

I had thought about just finding a stick and using that for the center pole. Or it say is you can tie it to a tree above it. How is the condensation in it?

Not at all. A buddy and I (we are both over 6') felt perfect with space for gear. It would be hard to fit three large dudes and much gear but im sure it would work. Well woth the SL5.

Yeah, I can get some more pics. Essentially, it is on the "right" panel as you face the door. While I have been learning to sew and all, I had bearpawwd.com go ahead and intall the stove jack for a nominal amount.

I love my SL3. It is a great one or two man shelter. I wanted the SL5, but it was sold out when I was ready to buy, so I ended up with the SL3. I'm happy with it though, plenty of room for two guys and gear, and a palace for one.

It is more than you need for two guys but it rocks when hunting in bad weather. It is really nice to be able to walk in with your boots on, sit on your pad and eat dinner without getting wet.

We compromise and run a duo mid nest from Mountain Laurel Designs in ours when it's just the two of us. Have a netted area with a bathtub floor to sleep in is nice in AK when the bugs are bad, yet it still let's us keep the majority of the shelter floor less. Only time we have used the stock nest is on rare occasions to sleep 4 adults inside. The SL5 fly sheet accommodates two people and their gear very well, although we have slept three with some gear and up to four (very little gear inside) in ours at times.













As Luke mentioned, we use trekking poles as the center pole the majority of the time. We don't use an adaptor, just remove the top third of one black diamond pole, and put the pointy part of another whole pole into it and then erect our shelter. We have slept inside it set up this way theough some pretty nasty wind, rain and snow storms and the SL5 held up great.

Here is a picture to illustrate what Becca is describing about putting the two trekking poles together.

Vector32, the nest is just downright heavy. Now, if you are in a place that is very buggy or you don't have a long hike or you can split up the load, then it isn't too bad. However, going floorless also has many benefits already mentioned.

You can also see in Becca's photo above that they run a custom nest that is a whole lot lighter and still leaves a good chunk of the tent floorless.

Luke and Becca's set up is the best of both world when bugs are an issue. On the other hand, for some reason any Mosquitos that get in are attracted to the peak and tend to stay there.

I guess if I could get over my fear of not having the floor. I am just scared everything would bet wet. I am going to have to go to the golite store and give them another look. Thanks again for all the information on them tho. It's been great !!

Vector - where are you located? Be happy to meet up and show you the ins and outs of my Oware 9'x9' which is very similar to the golite.
At 81sqft of covered space for only 26oz (fly only) - pretty hard to beat.

Still working on the intake sizing a little. That was the first run actually in the tent and it was toasty. When it is running really hot like that it was really sucking air. Overall though, I think it is a really nice fit and should be a great addition.

Do they come with a stove jack or are you guys putting them in yourself? What kind of stove is that?

Stove jacks are installed after - John at Bearpaw here in Fort Collins does a good job. He even makes a very similar designed tent and could install it while he makes the tent.
The stove is a homemade project that is pretty close to either the Ed T or Ti Goat.
