Going above treeline question

First rifle season kicked me out of my plan A spot. I felt there was too much snow and too cold. Probably not the case but how late to you get above treeline? Or what are the worst conditions you will hang out above treeline before dropping lower?

I hardly ever hunt above treeline, but I've killed elk between 10k and 11k feet with over a foot of snow on the ground......even as late as November.

Thanks 5MB. Are you using snow shoes with a foot of snow?

I've been hunting (successfully) at 11k the last few years in 1st rifle, this year we bailed lower down due to 2' of snow up there and no tracks. I've seen some references that once snow is near 2' and sticking around most elk tend to leave unless there are wind blown slopes or something for feed. 1' of snow wouldn't chase me out of an area and no I likely wouldn't be bothering with snow shoes for that depth, for 2' I was wishing I hadn't left them in the truck though... Its not a question of how late in the year, its all year to year based on when the snow hits. You don't ever HAVE to be up that high either.

I will hunt the alpine right into late November. I use snowshoes when the snow base is around a settled foot. Post-holing tires me out.

Thanks guys. I was just hoping to cover a lot of country with the glass before the season opened. Might just have to suck it up next time.

Elk tend too drop down when the snow gets deep, easier for them to feed in shallow snow or at the snow line.Follow the tracks if they're migrating down follow them.
