I drew a late season mule deer tag this year and want to be prepared for any extreme cold weather. Whats the go to Puffy that will not make me look and feel like marshmallow man

Stone Glacier Grumman puffy coat and pants. Get them both. Makes all the difference when you’re glassing.

Looking like a marshmallow man is not a bad thing but nobody wants to feel the excessive bulk. I have 5+ years in a Kifaru LPP half zip. I've tried others briefly but keep coming back to it.

"Extreme cold" calls for a parka, down or synthetic- they are going to be bulky and heavy by their very nature.

Nunatak is no longer working with Apex (they might again in the future) so synthetic options are limited (in parkas, lighter jackets there is some selection). Patagonia's DAS parka is generally the one most people want to compare to- it's warm.

Down parkas more choices, but be prepared to lay out some coin- Patagonia, Rab, Montbell, Arcteryx and I think Sitka, Kuiu and possibly other hunting brands make some warmer parkas as well.

When comparing down parkas (or lighter jackets for that matter) get the fill weight/power (quality) so you can compare apples to apples in regards to warmth.

Not really looking for a Parka type jacket. I have that covered if temps are that bad. I always thought the Sitka Kelvin WS Hoodie was good but seems lots of complaints on the bulk it had.

Well that opens things quite a bit if you're looking for a midweight puffy :) I think all the top tier hunting outfits make at least one jacket in that range, ditto on the companies I listed above.

If you're leaning synthetic, I know the Kifaru LPP gets lots of good reviews; I have similar jacket with the same insulation (Apex 3.5) made by Nunatak and it's pretty darn warm and decently lightweight.

It's a light jacket (uses 2.0 Apex insulation); I use mine through the summer and a little into early fall (September). It's warm for its weight, but for me other than early season, not warm enough for sitting/glassing much below 40.

I really wish EE offered this jacket additionally in 3.6 and even 5.0 Apex. They already use that insulation in their quilts, so they have it on hand????

Rab Generator.
Great jacket with a Pertex shell and Primaloft fill.
Packs down well and being a belay jacket is cut sensibly.

i know?? Ive emailed them a few times over the years in hopes to get a different answer from them.

What would you compare this jacket to as far as warmth goes? I’ve been eyeing this jacket for sometime now..
I think its warmer than the FL puffy jackets I had and as warm as the Kifaru puffy jacket I had. That’s the jacket I use in Alaska for sheep hunts. At home during rifle seasons I use a blaze orange Patagonia pullover and a blaze orange EE pullover. I have not been cold yet with those combos.

Ll Bean has a great one, it has 850 fill and is treated. It is my go to, and seems to have a tougher shell material than some of the upper end camo brands.
