Go To Puffy

If it's super cold I used the Mountain Hardwear Phantom Parka. Medium cold I use the KUIU Superdown Pro.

I have and really like the FL Chamberlain but it's not what I would call my "go to puffy". It's heavier and doesn't pack down nearly as well as my other puffy jackets, but when I'm going to be stationary in really cold temps, the Chamberlain is awesome.

I've mostly been using Kryptek puffies. The down Aquillo has been my go to but I also have a Ghar and Lykos II jacket if I feel like the hunt might be wet or require a synthetic option. If the Ghar had a hood it might become my go to but without it I don't use it as much. I know hoods are a preference thing but I find them useful and rarely pack a beanie because of them. I'm having a tough time recommending Kryptek these days with the Muley Freak baggage but I do really like some of their puffies and gloves.

I've been tempted to buy a Kifaru LPP a few times but I don't really need it so I haven't talked myself into it yet. I'm more tempted to try a different mid layer like a Sitka Ambient than to switch up my puffy coats.

Rab Generator.
Great jacket with a Pertex shell and Primaloft fill.
Packs down well and being a belay jacket is cut sensibly.
This really looks nice. Am currently using an older RAB that has been great but in need of replacement

I drew a late season mule deer tag this year and want to be prepared for any extreme cold weather. Whats the go to Puffy that will not make me look and feel like marshmallow man
SG Grumman. Just got back from a week long trip to the Tetons/Yellowstone and wore it just about every day. Can’t speak highly enough of it. It was unusually cold for June (got down to 15ish degrees a few nights at some of my campsites) and I was perfectly warm with just a t-shirt & the SG Helio hoody underneath.

Anyone tried Mtn Ops Puffy-800 g Down?

For $249, seems like a decent deal. Thoughts?

It won’t be that warm with only 3 oz of down. I look for 5 oz minimum for 40 ish degree weather, any colder and you will get cold without extra layers of moving periodically.

Thought these had a reputation to be fragile.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about lighter fabrics with a puffy (other layers, definitely). You're not going to be hiking in it, it's going to be used when you're not moving- camp, breaks during the day, glassing, etc.

If in a worse case scenario, if you absolutely have to go through thick stuff, wearing it you can always layer over a more durable layer.

The kings puffys are surprisingly good. Probably the only kings piece that I’ll bring on a hunt. You can sometimes find them on sale for a good price too.

For those who own the RAB Electron Pro, I need some help with sizing. I am 5’8/170 pounds with an athletic build. Size 38 Chest. I would like to have some room for layering underneath. Any recommendations?
