GMC 6.2L vs Chevy 5.3L

My wife and i recently purchased a new to us 2015 GMC Yukon Denali and quickly realized it had motor issues. Thankfully the dealership bought it back from us and took it auction. We've since then looked at 4 other Yukon Denali with the 6.2l and everyone has either had lifter, injector or head issues. is this common on the 6.2?

Should we look into a vehicle like the Tahoe or a Yukon that has a 5.3l?

Not hunting related but curious if anyone has had issues with that motor as well.

Recently bought my wife a Yukon xl with the 3.0l duramax.. it was the only option in my opinion in regards to having something reliable .
The new 5.3 is not any more reliable than the 6.2

The 3.0 Duramax would be my choice as well! The wife on the other hand is responsible and is looking in that 2015-2018 range to keep payments down a bit.

All gm overdrive trannys are complete junk. I went rebel 3.0 liter diesal and love it. 900 mile range.

Not sure what’s changed in the 5.3L over the last couple decades. But I’m on year 24 with mine and coming up on 250k. I’ve changed the oil on it…..that is all. Maybe some plugs at some point. Runs strong.

I had a pickup with the 5.3 for ten years and never had a problem. My wife has had a suburban with the 5.3 for a few years, zero issues. Been a great vehicle , as was the pickup.

We are on our second GMC Yukon Denali XL. The first was around 2009 and went over 100k miles. The current is 2015 with 92k miles. We have not had any engine issues, fwiw.

I know the 2021 and later 6.2l is updated. I haven't heard of many problems. I've had a 5.3l for years with no problems except it felt underpowered.

I have a '22 3.0L SLT Crew Cab Std Bed diesel and love it! I also love the 25mpg average mileage! Same torque as the 6.2L

2010 Silverado went 278k miles, I ran premium fuel like you’re supposed to on the 6.2l. The 6.2l hasn’t been the same since since 2013. I think they switched the 6.2l to 4 cylinder shutdown or active fuel management mine had the variable valve timing.

I don’t think the 5.3l has been the same since 2007. Once they came out with the 4 cylinder shutdown to save fuel in 2008 it’s seems to have issues.

Id be curious to know if the cylinders having lifter issues are the same ones that shutoff for fuel economy. If that is the case I think your only saving grace would be buy a chip that deactivates the active fuel management. It would be worth looking into, I’m not sure if the chip would void warranty or not though.

Any gm v8 with afm/ dfm has the possibility for the lifters to go out. My 2017 5.3 with 75000 mi has the dreaded kiss of death lifter tick. And my cousins same year 5.3 with 80000 mi just went into the shop with two collapsed lifters and came out with a $4000 bill. Our local dealer won’t even order any new trucks with the 5.3 or 6.2 anymore because of all the problems, they are pushing the new l3b engine.

Still have my 02 gmc sierra, 5.3 with 235,000 miles. Engine purrs like a kitten.

Have a 2020 5.3 Silverado and haven’t had any issue. I also put a pulsar tuner on it and disable the dfm. That could be a good reason.

A friend’s 6.2 in his 2020 Chevy locked up. Took 6 months sitting at the dealer until they got a new engine to install. He’s ordered a new Ford!

The 5.3Ls from around 2014-present suck, unless you tune out the cylinder shut-off. They get lifter problems real bad. My friend had a 2015 Silverado 1500 that was in basically perfect condition, but it started ticking at like 150k miles. He's a mechanic and could have fixed it but sold it because it wasn't worth it

Had a 5.3 with bad lifters as well. Don’t think the 5.3 or 6.2 is gonna be as reliable as the 3.0 diesel

I just bought a 2023 GMC 5.3. it replaces my 2016 which replaced my 2013. I had zero issues with any of the 3.
