I had bladeless LASIK done in October 2012. It is something I would consider a priority for outdoor and hunting activities. I spent about $3000 got a 2 year zero interest loan to pay for it. Glasses were never an option for me although I had some as a backup. My vision was terrible at a -7.50 diopter, no correction=stranded. It boosted my confidence. If a night intruder came while my contacts were out I'd probably have been a goner. My vision fluctuates a bit but I think it has to do with the amount of rest I have had and diet. If you qualify go for it.

Tons of great info here. I looked into lasik and prk. If you dig a bit deeper than Eye surgeon reviews there are quite a few complications that are fairly common. Not just on the internet, but real life anecdotal reviews. Too common for me to have it done. Personally I know way too many people with dry eye. One of the things I have noticed is that you cant watch the tv without a prescription for dry eye add. You also cant listen to the radio without hearing a Lasik add. To me its not a coincidence. I wear glasses and have decided to put up with them. I plan on looking into some of the better contact solutions. You only get one set of eyes. If they are gone you might as well hand me my gun.

I have been doing a complete test of all the available contact lenses the past week or so,,,these old eyes are spitting out and suffering with all the latest and greatest contacts. The wife says NO to the lasik for me, the old Oasis standard soft contacts with a top notch set of glasses may end up being the final combo. A few more options left to try, my eye doctor is very patient :) .

After 33 years of contacts I'm done with them and the constant hassle they are in the outdoors. I moved to daily wear lenses about 8 years ago and they made a world of difference in my day to day experience and comfort, but they are still contacts. This year instead of shelling out $550 for a years supply (FSA payable, but still...) I decided to look A LOT more into Lasik. Needless to say after a 2 hours consultation I cancelled my upcoming regular eye doc exam / contact fitting / re-up and will be getting lasik in both eyes on 3/31. I'm 42 and my eyes have been stable for the last 10 years, have thick corneas (yeah baby!) and apparently I'm a solid candidate. The cost is going to be approximately $3000 which includes 3 years of "touch ups" if required, etc.

Hopefully, in 3 weeks I'll be able to tell you it's awesome and suggest you go that route.

Lasik is like a dream and has been considered, but I have the fear of losing vision and some vision problems occur later in life within my family genetics, my vision corrects perfectly, I have worn the Oasis soft contacts for some time and have been a soft contact wearer for 39 yrs,,so kinda stuck in rut, but what is the brand your using Blackpowder? The Rudy Project looks interesting, my eye doctor has finished 6 Iron Mans so I bet he is familiar with this product line. The problem I have is removing the contacts and reinserting in a.m. . I value my vision so I have always been very cautious to remove and clean my contacts every day. My eye doctors have always told me not to sleep with the lenses and when I have on the rare occasion I do, my eyes are dried out and in pain the next day. I also have the problem that older guys get, my arms aren't long enough to read or see to do minute things without readers,,I find it a pain also to have readers for reading maps/gps/tying knots in mono,,etc,,,etc,,,,fun part of getting old.

If you are stuck on keeping contacts I can't recommend the daily wear enough. At the end of the day you ditch them. Every morning put in a brand new pair.

I moved to daily wear disposable two years ago and they work great. Wear glasses most of the time, but use contacts when I am shooting, hunting, fishing, hiking, or doing photos. They are expensive, but if you only use a couple pairs a week, it isn't too bad. They also come in bifocal versions, which I will be looking at when my current supply runs out - as it is a pain to have to have a pair of reading glasses around when I have my contacts in if I need to tie a fly or read some small text.

Gonna resurrect this thread for a bit. After much experimenting in coordination with my very patient eye doctor, I have what I hope is the final solution for my old eyes without spending a good chunck of change on Lasik. I will be wearing the soft contacts that I wore before, but a little tweaking and lowering the power really got me back in balance, especially with the 2 inch I phone screen. What I do feel is the coolest thing that I discovered is a new set of glasses,,,yes I said glasses. Check em out,,,they are called SWITCH . The cool part about them is one frame and a huge combination of lenses that are magnetic to cover all the bases. So my sunglasses lenses can be the same frame my prescription lenses are. Wearing contacts, carry the glasses with, put in shooting lenses in am, switch to polarized lenses midday for fishing, take contacts out, switch to my prescription transition lenses, and so on and so on. The downside is the lenses are kinda like buying high end clothing,,ya need this, then ya need that, then this then that,,can get deep in your pocket. Anyhow the only time in the last 40 years I have actually been excited about glasses, keep an eye on the classifieds a few pair of Costas will be up for sale soon. Want to also say thanks to everyone who contributed great ideas to the thread, helped me immensely.

This thread was resurrected just in time. Have an eye appointment later this month and planning on doing a consult with a lasik specialist sometime probably in the end of June and July.
For those that's had their eyes done I do have some questions. How much healing time did you guys need for the lasik or the PRK procedure. Would you hesitate getting it done a few months prior to hunting season? For the guys of had to make payments or finance it somehow, did you go get a loan from the bank or just get financing through the doctors office or someplace they recommend?

I had my lasik done on a June Friday evening. It took a couple of hours laying on the couch with an ice bag for the pain to subside. I think I had a wee bit tougher recovery than most. By the following morning I was fully recovered and went on an overnight hike. I was more careful on the log crossings then normal but no real issue's.

I did deal with the nighttime "halo" effect around bright lights and did have some nighttime driving issues for a month or two. I also burned thru the eye drops they prescribed and even had the prescription renewed once.

By Sept first I was golden but still using OTC eye drops daily. In my experience you should be just fine for hunting season if you get it done in July. But the earlier the better.

I paid cash so can't help there.

I had PRK done on a Friday about noon. Went back to the hotel, slept the night, went back to the eye institute next morning for a quick check up and Sunday morning jumped on the plane to come home. Vision was 20/20 and 20/15. That was in 1997 and vision is still the same today. Bottom line, 3 days and I was back to my normal routine.

Had my lasik done one day, went home and slept that night. Woke up and drove myself to the eye check up. Purely amazing.

Used the pain eye drops that first day because those before me said there was no reason to be a hero. Used the medicated drops until my second checkup a couple weeks later.

Had a bighorn sheep hunt one month after the surgery and I carried useless weight with my eye drops. Never needed them once. I can remember using them a few times the week or two after the surgery.

Can't believe how lucky I am to wake up and have better than perfect vision everyday. After 20 plus years of contact use the only complaint I have is that I should have done lasik sooner.

If your own eye doc says that Lasik would be a good fit for you.................. what are you waiting for?????????????

I took a day off from work (to appease the doc) but I really think that I could have gone to work the next day. I followed my own eye doc's suggestion to over lubricate my eyes for the first week and I had zero negative effects.

Life long glasses wearer. I picked my favourite Oakley wrap around frames and had transition lenses put in them. Perfect for most everything. Rain always sucks but it's really not the end of the world.

I had lasik done on 3/31 and I'm very happy with the results. I still have dry eyes when I wake up in the morning, but otherwise I'm good. 2 days after surgery I fished and ran a boat all day without issue even though I was concerned about excessive dryness due to the wind. So far I'm glad I went this route.

I had lasik done yesterday. So far so good. Went back for my follow up this morning and tested at 20/20 vision with a little bit of fuzziness in my left eye. The fuzzies went away and I feel like I'm seeing better now than what I was even this morning. It is quite an amazing process.
