GI issue MSS sleeping systems?

Hey everyone, I just bought a couple of GI issue military sleep systems for cheap, just wondering how good they are in the cold and if that gortex bivvy is any good.

If it's the camo bivi they work great I have had mine for 4 years now with no problem I just use it and a tarp all elk season keeps me nice and dry

The ECWS is definitely a good bag system but its heavy as all get out. The outer material on the ECWS bag is DWR and very tough so your set in that area. The dual bag system is going to work great down into the single digits. I was out with Aron a few weeks ago and used the dual bags with the temp at 4* and I was doing fine with my beanie on. I used the inner light recon bag for summer scouting trips and was more then comfy in it. For the price I think you will be happy with the ECWS bags, but if your packing it in you won't be happy with the weight.

I have to disagree with Idaho Bowhunter on the bivy. I think its a P.O.S! Being in the military I've used this thing more times then I want to remember and every time I use it I say the same thing - THIS THING DOESN'T BREATH WELL! The Gortex just doesn't breath that well compared to products like eVent. The newer ACU camo ones are worse then the older woodland camo ones.

I have the old woodland camo one cant complain at all my dad got it for me right before he retired from USMC I like it because of how tuff it is

Wow, I've been running too long

I thought "GI issue" meant an upset stomach! My experience with gov't issue gear is that it performs better than similar price point items in retail market, but is usually on the heavy side, compared to the top retail products.

I think for someone wanting to try hunting especially back country, it is a good starting point for testing the waters. If your motto is "better performance through aggressive spending", then buy the ultra lite "best of Backpacker Mag" gear.

It's bulky as well, I only use it when my main mode of transport isn't my feet.
