Am guessing some (ex-)military guys here will be aware of these, but for those who are not ...

An outfit called Warrior Assault Systems makes a wrist case specifically for Garmin 301 and 401 GPS units: Garmin Wrist Case - MultiCam | Warrior Assault Systems

While it's yet another piece of gear - and is obviously more bulky than just wearing a 301/401 directly on your wrist with its provided strap, there might be a few scenarios in which its useful.

For example, if you want to wear the unit, but don't trust the thin elasticised strap that comes with the Garmin; if you're concerned about sunlight glint off the exposed face of a (wrist-worn) Garmin; if you're worried about carrying the unit and dropping and/or breaking it; and so on.

I've ordered one just to try it out and see wearing it works for me.

I've seen other models out there - one much cheaper one is called a 'Viper'. Only a couple of reviews on Amazon which aren't positive, but it's not a large sample size. At the very least, that model looks more bulky and even their own promotional photos show wobbly stitching ... so the Warrior model might be the better bet.
