So if I can remember right, these usually go on sale for 100$ off at one point during the year right? Curious if I should wait and buy a new one then, or pick up a used for for around 250$.

From what I’ve read, the mini 2 is worth the extra 100 dollars over the original mini. Much better battery, quicker signal acquisition. I just bought a mini 2 a couple weeks ago for $400 and I don’t think they will have the new version on sale any time soon.

I don’t have the mini, I have a 62 whatever, probably “older” and slower. I’m pretty satisfied with signal acquisition time, but I use it infrequently, really only to send messages so I’m not in a hurry. I’ve hunted with folks that are dropping pins/tracks everywhere and I could see in that case acquisition time would be a factor

Limited data set, but my original Mini seemed way faster when I used it over Memorial Day weekend. Messages sent in seconds.

How do you know what version of the Mini you have? Bought mine last year. It does seem to take a long time to acquire a signal. I guess if I'm bleeding out, the couple extra minutes isn't going to make a difference.....

When it does connect, I think it's an excellent safety tool. I've only used a handful of times, basically 1 text per trip just to make sure it works. I love how it connects to my phone with the Earthmate app. It's also so small I take it dirt bike riding, hunting, fishing, pretty much anywhere I go out into the wilderness.

These are great little devices. Much like the iPhone, you can always wait a few months hoping to get a newer version or a better price on the current model yet that means going without for now and maybe the shelf is empty when you have no more time to hold off buying. You do not have to be on a hunt to benefit from this unit. You can use when scout or hike or are traveling on dead spots in highways that lack cell phone reception since flat tires and break downs do happen. I used to lug a sat phone then the Spot. The Mini rocks compared to those when compare features and weight of the solution for a 10 day hunt.

Just got lucky. Bought one from a member on here for 250$ that was in mint and had case. I seen another show up around 275$. Glad I pulled the trigger.
