I just was given a 30-06 that my grandfather built in the 50s. It is an Eddystone Enfield action, Bausch and Lomb BALvar 8 scope and a walnut stock he handmade. 26”, 5-groove barrel and weighs in at 10lb 3oz. No plans to make changes. Just give a good inspection, cleaning and detailing, and fresh oil on the stock.
The handloads that came with it are primarily 180 Grand Slam bullets, and some others that are much older I can’t yet identify. Lots of fresh brass though. If I don’t stick with Grand Slams, I plan to use 180 Partitions, but open to others. 168 Ballistic Tips, 178 ELD-X, 165 Partition, etc.
A quick scan of Grand Slam reviews suggests they are not bad. Any reviews for elk and deer at less than long ranges?
I have a couple pounds of H4350 that should work for whatever 165-180 bullet.

That’s cool that he went whole hog and did it right taking the belly out of the bottom metal and welding the straight handle like a Rem720 on the bolt. I presume it was converted to cock on open too?

Grandslams have went through several iterations over the years but they’ve always been pretty decent. I wouldn’t hesitate to shoot whatever needs shooting with that rifle with one.
