Garmin deal. 299

I wonder if the starlink cell phones are putting pricing pressure on these? I am going to test my phone on a trip this month and see.

One of my friends who overlands gave me an idea of purchasing starlink phone plan and keep the package sealed, if I need it I can activate it on the spot anywhere. The downside, is how to properly go through activation process and lack of troubleshooting during an emergency.

I’ll probably never use my inreach again after using the iPhone satellite messaging while bear hunting this spring. It was awesome.

How was the activation process, coverage? Can you pause the subscription once you go back home? Does it drain the phone battery?

If you have ATT iPhone you don’t have to do anything. Once you are out of service your phone connects to satellite for text messaging. It’s too easy.

I too had zero idea iPhone satellite messaging was a thing. I need to try it out. That said, I’ll keep my inReach as a redundancy and for the SOS/tracking/SAR insurance.

I picked up the messenger plus as my fathers days present with this sale. I was up bear hunting a couple weeks ago the iPhone was working great the first night then the next 2 days it didn’t send or receive a single message I don’t know if it was something i did wrong but no way I’d trust that with our upcoming trip to Kodiak this fall.

I have inreach that I used last year during our Elk hunt, it worked fine. But I would like to have the ability to use my phone features.
My question is: can you pause the starlink subscription once you are back home.
I won’t need it once I am out of the wilderness

If you have att and an iPhone there is no starlink subscription. It’s included in your cell service.

Its free. I was in the middle of nowhere idaho wilderness for a week and imessaged my wife like I was at home. Sometimes it takes a second to lock onto a satellite, but it was still fairly quick.

It has nothing to do with ATT, its provided by Apple as part of there Iphone services. Iphone 14 or newer with IOS 18 I believe.

We used the Zoleos a good bit this spring because satellite messaging wasn't working well for a couple guys. Probably user error, but it was also a little tough for a spotter to keep eyes on a moving bear while trying to keep the phone connected to satellite for incoming messages. Similarly, for the shooter(s) to keep the phone connected while within 150 yards of the bear we were after but couldn't see yet. Having the Zoleo on "Always On" message check interval was more effective.

Also drained phone battery a ton (iPhone 15, about a year old). I had the phone on low power, airplane mode all day and would have to charge after lunch.

I'm not ditching the Zoleo (or inReach) anytime soon.

I do know it is the newer models of iPhone that have this feature. My phone was getting a bit beat up and older and after watching my buddies work flawlessly it confirmed it was time to buy a new phone. Having said that, I still have my Inreach with me as I can start and stop the service, likewise it receives without having to align the satellites iphone new feature.

yeah, I am going to put my inreach up for sale. I dont see the point of having both personally

I’ll stick with an Inreach for emergency situations. My life is more important than risking the ability to text via my iPhone during an emergency. Maybe I’ll change my opinion as technology improves.
