Looking to buy new game bags:
Ovis Sacks
Caribou
Or the new Argali? Which would you choose and why?

Or would you buy the Allen Backcountry Game Bags (20x30") for about $26? They weigh 6 oz for four and will handle an entire boned out elk (1 for each hindquarter, 1 for both shoulders, and then 1 for backstraps, tenderloins, and trim.

Dmcook, please don't take offense - I'm not trying to derail your thread. I'm in your exact same position. I don't know what the more expensive bags do that the cheap Allen bags can't do.

I'm interested in this as well. Going on my first hunt this year (that wasn't organized by my Uncle who had all the gear I needed), and I'm really torn between price versus perceived value.

I have the Allen and Black Ovis bags, the Ovis sacks are nice but for the price the Allen sacks work great. I use the 28x50 for elk and the 20x30 for deer. This year I'm mixing it up and carrying 2 of the Allen 28x50 for elk hind quarters, 2 of the Ovis XL for front quarters, the Ovis loose meat bag and one Allen 20x30 for loose meat. Main reason I'm doing this is my LE tag is for a steep rocky unit and I want to have enough bags in case I have to lighten up the hind quarters a few pounds to get them out without killing myself.

If I had to do it over again I would just purchase both sets of Allen bags and mix and match as needed. I'd just take the 4 20x30 bags for deer and I would take the 4 28x50 and one or two of the 20x30 for elk.

For the same price as the Ovis 5 bag set a guy could have 8 Allen bags to mix and match.

Black Ovis sacks for me, been using them for 3 seasons now without any issues. They clean up nice in the washing machine too.

Out of the ones on that list I've only used the Caribou, but I've put them through hell. Over here in Australia, we have a bloke importing the Caribou bags now as well, so when the time comes to buy more, I'll be going with them. My first set I bought off the SoloHntr website and they were better than any of the other cotton crap I'd used previously.

My point is, I'm so happy with Caribou I'd buy them again and again. I've packed out dozens of animals with them (deer, pigs, goats) and can't find anything to complain about.

I’ve always used the $20 Alaska bags from Cabelas here in Maine for moose but flies aren’t an issue. All I’m hearing about on podcasts and in articles is that for Colorado elk is it’s warm and flies will lay eggs through the cheap cheesecloth bags. Appreciate for your input.

Hit up Felix40 on here, he makes great game bags at a very reasonable cost. I got a set from him a few years back and hauled multiple animals out with them.

He just started making them again and I picked up more from him this year.

I have all three listed but haven’t put meat in the argali yet.

The ovis and caribou bags feel like the same material to me. Haven’t had any problems with with either, being used multiple times.

Argali are lighter and I’m looking forward to filling them up this year, they have a few featuresI like to see.

I was going to buy Black Ovis last season but were out of stock. Bought Caribou and they served me well. They held up to weight of full elk quarters. I was not able to pack out the entire elk in one day and by day two the crows had found a sack of meat. Needless to say they did not hold up to the crows but I doubt any of the meat sacks would.

But are the Allen bags really 6 oz for 4 or 6 oz each? Pretty sure it is the latter.

I use either caribou or tags. This year I’m using my elk and deer on the bone caribou bags. I’ve beat the shit out of both brands and they both do a really good job. I’ve heard good things about jimmy tarps bags and ovis sacks. Argali is newer but they look good too. Once I get home I just transfer the quarters to the heavier knit Alaska bags for hanging and wash my game bags for another day. You can find them on sale throughout the year. Camofire and Black ovis run sales on ovis sacks all the time so keep your eyes peeled for those.

ChrisAU, sorry man I was wrong. Here is an Allen bag with 3 game bags (20x30”) in it. Weighs 9.4 oz so a complete set of four bags would make it about 12 oz.

Still pretty light for the price. They’d probably sell a pile more of those if some accurate info was published!

After ChrisAU made me weigh the Allen bags here is what I found:

Allen bags (4) 20x30" with carrying bag weighs about 12 oz, costs $27
Felix40 sells (5) bags 13"x29" with carrying bag weighs 7.5 oz, costs $39

I chose the bags made by Felix40, who is a member here. That made my decision easy. Thanks ChrisAU for questioning me to find the facts. And thanks to nickstone for mentioning Felix40.
