Game bags-Is too big a problem?

I only have one set of deer sized game bags, this year I am trying to go back after deer and pick up a bear tag as well. If I get lucky and could fill both tags, I would have more meat than bags. Obviously the deer size would be best for both but how bad of an idea is it to pick up an elk set and have extra room? Thought process is I want to go elk hunt next year as well, and dont want to buy extra stuff I dont need.

Its no problem having bags too large, IMO. The only thing is additional weight. I have one set of bags that I 've used for elk and deer. And, if weight is a thing, I have fit two deer shoulders in one bag, and kept room between them. Actually made it easy to toss it over a limb, like a saddle.

Kind of depends on how you are packing it out. Are you leaving the bone in? Are you carrying the meat inside your pack? Bone in wont matter as much as the bone will keep the meat structured. If you are boning out the meat a larger bag will allow the meat to settle to the bottom in a big blob. You can mitigate this by putting it in your pack and using the straps to keep the meat upright along the pack structure.

Yeah, boned out meat is a different set of needs.

I run elk bags regardless and bone out. It's not perfect but also not an issue although I am sure it "could" be done better. Honestly, I am over the hassle of optimizing bag setups for packing and am young/strong so it's good enough.

Get blaze orange ones, its a great "free" safety feature.

I’m using a straight jacket. With that many straps I should be able to haul bags of jello lol
