Gaiter question

My hunting buddy just got back from a scouting trip, and he informed me we would be making a lot of stream crossings. My question is, do gaiters do a good job of keeping water out of your boots, when the water depth exceed the top of the boot? In other words, does water seep up under the gaiter and thus into the boot? I have no experience wearing them, and am looking into buying a pair.
 
I found that if you move quickly, that system works fairly well. Add rain pants to the equation and it works great.

Yes, it works well for shallow, quick crossings. The more overlap the better, so a 10" boot is significantly better than an 8" boot in that regard.

I made it through this one with dry feet using a quick high step... but was pushing my luck. It's best for the shallower and shorter stuff.
