First I want to be like mtwardern when I grow up but we did a mini adventure on the Wasatch Front yesterday.
Took the two oldest a couple miles up to a nice hidden meadow off trail.

Once to the destination dug out the fire ring and cut some oak.

Then started on the snow cave

Then a break for lunch

Then momma and the two youngest came up

Lots of playing. Built a snow man.
Got all the gloves, hats and feet wet.
Played in cave more. Getting more snow this morning.
Seriously contemplating sleeping up there now.

Then as darkness approached it was time to head for home.
Save time riding down on contractor bags on several parts of the trail.

Not sure how to do videos but they are more entertaining than the pic for sure.

In Rinellas book about raising outdoor kids he says in response to his kids questioning why they are doing uncomfortable things-
" so you can hang out with cool people when you're older "
I really like that and hope my boys achieve that.

Looks like a blast! I need to make sure I get my kids out for adventures like this more often. It can be a project sometimes, but makes for great memories and learning.

Nicely done!

Definitely go back and sleep in the snow cave, if you have a waterproof bivy- bring it.

If you have to take a whizz in the middle of the night, simply roll to your side an have at it- simply pull a little snow over the top of it when done :D

It's always a project but also always turns out being worth it.
