I am looking to put a co-witness red dot on my XDM 10mm I carry at all times in the woods. I hunt thick country, and have been told I absolutely must go fully enclosed. Anybody with woods experience want to chime in on that?

Yep, good idea to have a fully enclosed model unless you're confident there won't be any rain. I have a G17 with an RMR (non enclosed) and if a single drop gets on the emitter the red dot is useless until you blow it out. You can still use the iron sights but they can be more difficult to see when there's rain on the red dot glass.

Yeah I agree, anything that you carry for self defense should be enclosed emitter. Why risk it?

I would definitely go closed emitter. I carry either a Holosun 509t or EPS depending on what I’m doing that day.

At this point there are enough enclosed micro red dot sights on the market that you should buy any new enclosed option for woods use. Aimpoint Acro, Trijicon RCR, Holosun 509 and EPS series are all solid.
