Freezing boots to stretch

I found this article on stretching boots that sounds pretty interesting (http://www.greatoutdoors.com/published/boot-fitting-guide) Think this would work with modern boots with the rubber rands?

Extra W-i-d-e Feet
Freeze them. The boots that is. Take two puncture-free produce bags commonly found in a grocery store. Place one bag inside the other. Stuff these doubled-up bags down into your boot, as if you were trying to line the boot with the bags. Lace the boots up with a lacing tension similar to what you would use if your feet were in them. Now carefully add water to the produce bag. Avoid getting water in the boot lining. When the bag contains enough water to fill the entire boot area below the ankle, securely tie off the top of the bag using several wire twist-ties. Now pop the whole set-up -- boot, bags, and water -- into the freezer, where the liquid will solidify overnight and expand. This expansion is your widening tool; you can imagine what this does to the forefoot of your boot. Viola! Your D width is now an E. If you need to drastically widen the boots, use this procedure in multiple stages, using new bags for each width stage.

Pretty interesting!

I would have to think the expanding water (now ice) would just travel the path of least resistance though. ie) up the ankle of the boot rather than truly stretching the leather. Would be interesting to see if it works or not. You going to try it?

This does work I used it to widden one of my boots awhile back.. After putting water in bags I put a dumbbell weight in the back of the boot to keep the ice from coming out of the front of the boot.. If that makes sense..

I'm not sure why it doesn't work that way but I know I split a metal water bottle open when it froze even though it had a good inch and a half of air in the top... I would have thought it could expand into the air space but it didn't.

Yup it works. I used a small bag in the toe and a larger one in the top.

Be prepared for wet boots when it thaws tho :-)

I dont know if I'll try. I've tried almost every boot out there, I think I'm a 4E width. I have some brand new scarpas that almost fit that i'm tempted to try this on but I might return and try some meindl wides. Sucks having atypical feet, there's alot of good boots out there for standard widths.
