Fort Riley Kansas Elk Hunt

I got into a bugle fest on October 29th, they were just over on the range. I remember because that's my wedding anniversary. Killed my cow the next day.

Update for the day... its hot, truck says it hit 89. So not high hopes for this evening. But im going to be sitting on a high glassing point watching the artillery range hoping to catch them heading to feed.

Got checked out by the game warden today but he'd only been on the job two months so he didn't have a lot of info.

That mess of trees is there home and they are untouchable in there. They are bugeling there asses off

Well im just going to have get up on the spot and stalk and turn to ambush. With a muzzleloader it just to damn thick and dry to get close. Heard a bugle in range and dropped off the ridge. Never heard him again and probably never would have gotten close. Boots covered 9 miles today. They were still bugling there ass's off in there at 8:00 PM when I got back to the truck.

If the wind is right im sitting on a hidden bean field that has lots of tracks going into it. It's dry as hell there so I have no idea how fresh those tracks were. High of 90 degrees tomorrow.

Remember, elk are noisy. Make elk noises, make noises walking, it all seems normal to them. Make elk noises, sneak around, that’s not normal. Good luck! Get one off the closed area and get aggressive. Head right at him, keep some cover in front of you and go get him!!!! Imagine how much noise an elk makes walking. Good luck!

You don't need to worry about being quiet hunting elk. They aren't big deer. You get a herd walk near you you'll understand.

If they are bugling get in there and kill one. Keep the wind in your face. They are telling you right where they are.

Man where they were is off limits. It's a tank/artillery range. Really there elk paradise is part of the safety buffer zone. Either way you can't get in there after them.

theres not a single other place to hunt where they’re bugling? That’s the ONLY place that holds elk? I bet there are elk in other spots. Even if it’s 1, I’d rather go after him then sit in a blind and hope one wanders by! I know nothing about The hunt, but I wonder if you’re pigeon holing yourself just a little with the “thats where all the elk are” mentality.

Sitting in a whole different area today. Nothing in the field yet.

Ucsdryder no the are tons of other areas. Im sitting in one now. For last night's hunt I was just pot committed for the night. I knew they were in there and was hoping to catch them moving out. Didn't work out.

The other challenging thing is that the hunting areas rotate depending on the Armys training and know where you can hunt about three days ahead of time. The area I hunted yesterday is closed today.

Trying to figure out what to do to be productive during the lull. Walked the edge of some hill tops. Found a spot with beds that distinctly smelled like wet dog?

Driving around now just scouting and figuring the place out.

Yeah... thats elk... maybe with a mix of a cattle farm as well.

Good luck Matt! I'm familiar with the area and have actually been picking up some elk on my trail cams from 9/25 up until 5 days ago. I'll let you know if they show back up.

Pin mark is where I was set up this morning. Nothing came to the field but heard a bugle at 0655 in the cover to the north. Wind was from the south so went to the north edge and walked the east side of the creek. That was nasty thick junk, didn't see anything.
