Forest Service HQ Move

How would that work for multiple national forests in one state?
That I’m not entirely sure. Maybe it is where the majority of the land base is for that forest. In this map the areas back east are only going to have one office for many states much like the old regions.

The US Government is not a company (yet)...however for corporations, a move like this would typically lose at least 70% of HQ employees as they would be unwilling to relocate.

Straight from the horse’s mouth.

Looks like the Auburn, Alabama “state” office will be responsible for the Ozarks and Ouachitas as well as all the gulf coast states.

While they say any offices not listed for closure here are currently under evaluation, and I think the impact varies state-by-state, it looks like my neck of the woods is getting shafted. Unless they’re keeping district offices open as well.

The more I think about it, I think the SLC airport was probably an influential factor in the placement. Plus, Salt Lake is pretty centralized to the rest of the West.

In my experience as a former seasonal employee, the change came in the 70s when management went from district to one size fits all. Silvaculture went away as well as long term planning. Selective cutting changed to coastal massive clearcuts that totally destroyed ecosystems.

Its time to start over and you might have to work on the forestry schools. You have nothing left now so change is unknown but I don't see the path yet.

OK, there's one.

The list is actually impressively long. Polio and small pox were also eradicated due to government efforts. The interstate system. The Apollo space program. The Marshall plan/ rebuilding Europe following WW2. The Human Gnome Project was funded by the government and led to massive strides in cancer research. The internet began as a DOD project, hydro electric dams….. this list could go on for a long time. Give credit where credit due. The whole “the government screws up everything” is an entirely lazy perspective that falls apart instantly when confronted with facts. Not saying it’s perfect, but many of your health, comforts and conveniences would not exist without government effort. And, really, what’s the viable alternative? An Ayn Rand inspired Technocrat society? Think you’ll get public land in that dynamic?

While I really dislike the idea of having some disconnected and out of touch bureaucrats in DC running the FS, I think this reorg is likely only a plan to further dismantle the FS, cause chaos, and put those decision makers in closer proximity to Ftards like Mike Lee

Well, hopefully the Mormons don’t start running it. Interesting move in Mike Lees state.
Well Mormon organizations in general are extremely organized and efficient so maybe a fed agency could use a dose of that . However I want Mike Lee’s greasy mitts nowhere near any sort of public land policy decision making.

There was a time in America where government was focused on solving problems for America and making life better. Sadly, much of that focus has turned to grift for the insiders. Does the term “Somali day care” ring a bell?

Not the immediate, most urgent or most alarming example of grift that comes to mind, but, I agree with the sentiment.
