So i am into my second season of "trying" to get these things to work right and i just cant get it. So my question is this..... For those of us that cant get these right what are our options. What are your favorite non-DIAPHRAGM calls.

Several decent bite and blow type calls on the market. Primos Hyperlip single and double would be examples.

Keep practicing on the digphragms in the mean time. It took me over two years when I was learning to use them.

Use the diaphragm calls with the tab (or plate or dome) on top that helps keep it positioned correctly. These are much easier to use that the original versions, even for us who grew up using these for turkeys. Also trim the back of the call if it makes you gag, but these kind don’t have to go so far back to work like the original versions. This is my favorite elk call:

Bugling Bull External reed is a good sounding bugle and is easy to blow. The problem I found is that I could not chuckle but fine for locates and going up and down.

Keep practicing with the diaphrams...for me at least, once I got it, I got it.

I agree, keep practicing. I commute 35 minutes every morning and evening, and I went for about 3 weeks, everytime I stepped in my truck first thing i did was pop in a diaphragm. I bought a 3 pack of calls + the instructional CD by Primos at cabelas for $30ish, and while the content of the CD sucks, the sounds are pretty good to practice along with, and it starts simple, with explaining how to get the call inyour mouth properly. Just my .02, Good luck dude.

at least you recognize it. a lot of good external reed calls both cow and bugles but they are limited in sounds. for me, I am not a great caller and average at best with a diaphragm. I call selectively and make sounds I know I can make sticking to the sounds I am best at. imo a guy does not have to know how to make every elk sound on the planet but a good 3 or 4 cow and bull sounds from any calls can git er done.

Another calling tip if you have a smartphone. Download the Sound Cloud app. You can record your calling and then play it back and listen to it. Works especially well with a bluetooth. It really really helps to hear your sounds recorded.

That last post with the attachment was really good. One thing I have found is to find a diaphram call that fits your roof of your mouth. I have a smaller sized one so I have found I can pretty much use any brand just the smaller ones. Some times it takes time but you will find the one that fits you. Bob.
