Had a first for me the other day. Went turkey scouting at a new place the other day and wore my mucks due the the amount of recent rain we have gotten in the area and the river bottoms we were looking at. I rubbed a heck of a blister on the back of my heel and it got me thinking about some questions for my upcoming out west trip. What all do you all do preventative wise and if you run across problems like blisters when you are hunting. FYI I typically don’t wear mucks hunting.

First thing for me is wool socks. 3 years ago I started wearing wool as my only type of sock and it has made a huge difference. Sometimes I will also use occasionally use foot powder to prevent excessive moisture.

If I have a couple of common hot spots that persist I use mole skin on the inside of my boot to smooth out those areas. I may even tear out a little fabric or snip off some interior leather if needed and replace it with moleskin.

I have also pretaped my heels when I knew I was at high risk of blisters, such as knowing I had a ton o walking in rubber boots.

Leukotape. That shit stays on for a week so you don't have to deal with it every day. Any other spots you can also use Trail Toes or Glide products to keep friction down. Liner socks help as well.

Leukotape is great stuff and as mentioned sticks to anything. Just be careful removing it from your heel. I typically leave it on for 2-3 days which can make your skin damp underneath like bandaids do. I made the mistake Last season of tearing the Leukotape off too fast and it ripped the skin off my heel which was as bad or worse than a blister.

If my feet take a beating and ache at night, I have a difficult time sleeping. I carry a tube of Biofreeze and rub a little on each foot.......soothing!

Duct tape / gorilla tape also works pretty well. Definitely not as adhesive as leukotape but it comes off at the end of the day a little bit easier. Make sure your feet are dry before you put it on though, otherwise it will shift.

BREAK IN YOUR BOOTS!

Sorry for yelling. 🙃 Whole lot of people regret not doing so.

Tape hot spots, change wool socks during the day, learn blister care. I really like that Biofreeze idea, gonna add that to the list myself.

The best option is to toughen your feet up and have a pair of well fitting boots or shoes. I only wear good tight woven merino wool socks to prevent them stretching and getting loose while wearing them. Soft stretchy wool will end up getting loose and bunching up under foot causing rub spots. I like darn tough socks they're guaranteed for life and will replace em free of charge when they fail. I've sent in a pair that my dog chewed and they replaced it. I will normally wear them for 3 days before changing them. Also take care of your feet, wipe em down with wet wipes every night and let them air dry for a few minutes or hours. I hunt both in boots and also running shoes depending on the location, never have a problem. But I also hike a lot and run for my job so my feet are pretty hardened

Sometimes it takes a lot longer than you think it will to break in your boots but that's probably #1. Tighten my boots often and I've had really good luck with Leukotape once I feel a hotspot starting. That stuff stays put for several days even with damp socks. No blisters yet just really sore calves if it's steep country.

I have not had many blister issues, however I smoked my heel in similar boots that didn't fit well. Had to duct tape my heel for months after. Always have a roll in the truck so that is what I use.

Great fitting boots that are already broke in and you are confident in! Socks that fit and offer a little padding. My particular feet like lots of room for my toes. It's super important to wear boots that lock you in with lacing so the back of your foot and prevent your toes from rubbing in front of the boot. Great insoles and socks are almost as important as the boots! Nothing beats great boots, insoles, and socks....produce happy feet!
