New guy here as well. I see you fly some. A high school classmate of mine is a bush pilot instructor in AK. He was originally from AR. You don't happen to fly bush planes do you?

Welcome! Did a moose caribou combo hunt out of Iliamna back in 2004, that is pretty country. Is Lake Iliamna and the Newhalen still world class rainbow territory?

Yea, I guess that's what I fly now. Was flying for multiple charter and Part 121 operators, but retired from all that. Just fly my Husky, which is very similar to the world famous Piper Super-Cub. Most what I do is just exploring/trapping/hunting/fishing, off airport ops, which means we land on flat tundra, gravel blows, or gravel bars on rivers/lakes.

Cool. This is amazing country, and yea, some incredible fishing all around here. The Newhalen Rvr is fished very hard by the local lodges unfortunately, but out a way, like down the Kvichak Rvr drainage, there is some of the best Rainbow fishing on the planet. Caribou season is all but closed after the big crash of the Mulchatna herd in the late 90's. Moose are OK around here but trophy hunters hit the big bulls hard. We do ok, having my own plane and having flown around here for 25 plus yrs. What drainage did you hunt in 04?

I suppose my Husky qualifies as a bush plane. There are various trains of thought on the definition, but I do mostly land off airport while out hunting, fishing, trapping, exploring, etc.

Hunted the King Salmon River in 02 and the Chichitnok River in 04. Was clear to see the caribou herd decline; in 04 I am guessing that we saw about 1,500 caribou total on a 10 day hunt...and only about 10 of those were shooter bulls, and not even impressive shooter bulls. Good thing I was a meat hunter.

That’s neat country. My hunting pal took a monster moose up near the King Salmon about 15 years back. We flew it last fall, quite a bit of hunting pressure now unfortunately. We did see a few big caribou nearby, which was nice since they’re pretty rare these days.
