Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice. Last season I was shooting Easton FMJ 5mm 300 spine arrows with Grim Reaper expandable 110 grain broadheads. I’m pulling 72 pounds with a 30 inch draw. The issue is that nearly every arrow broke on impact, and that was just on whitetail.

I’m wondering if the Grim Reapers dumped too much energy and contributed to the arrows failing. I recently picked up another dozen 300 spine FMJs on a deal, so I want to get the build right this time for elk.

What do you guys recommend for insert or outsert setup, collars, and broadheads? I’m planning to run 125 grain fixed heads this time around, but I’m open to suggestions. My priority is durability and penetration, especially on quartering shots.

I’ve been shooting FMJ 400 with HIT inserts with 125 grain Magnus Black Hornet 4 blade for years and have never broke an arrow. I do use the Easton BAR 3 while shooting broadheads. Field points I shoot without.

I still have my original 6 arrows I bought in 2009 when I switched over to FMJ.

27 inch draw at 61lbs. Total weight, 459 grains and have never had issues other than “accidentally” shooting a boulder or two….lol

I've been shooting 6mm 320 FMJs for 10 years and never had one break unless the animal broke it after no pass through. This is several elk and dozens of whitetail. I switched b/c i had a few carbon shafts snap after hitting bone.

I just upgrade to HP or brass inserts and make sure everything is glued in solid.

Maybe stick to a solid fixed blade and avoid hitting bone.

The only ones I’ve had break on an animal are ones that didn’t pass through by hitting the off shoulder and the elk broke the arrow when it moved. An all carbon arrow will break as well. I use 340’s cut to 27”, 73 lbs. 50 grain HIT, no collar, 100 grain exodus broadhead. Love the fmj arrows but I come from the old school days when there were no carbon arrows.
