I just checked into an air Canada flight with my jetboil and they wouldn't allow me to take it. Apparently it may contain traces of gas. I've flown domestically and to NZ a bunch of times and never had this happen. They were kind enough to offer to send it to my address. I hope they do cause I don't know if you can buy the stove burner separately?

Anyone else had this problem? So is a backpack hunter supposed to buy a stove there then dump it before flying home?

I assume farting in the cabin is strictly prohibited! All that flammable methane!

not with a jet boil but I had a tsa agent say I could not take a new in the shrink wrap bottle for a msr. [traces of gasoline and all]- it was never used as in new- I had the regs printed out and eventually I won. but you never know who will try to interpret the regs their way.

other way is to ship ahead.

I've never had a problem with the stove, but never flew with fuel. I'm shipping a box of gear to myself ahead of my flight so I guess I'll put the entire stove in the box to prevent any issues with the airline.

Did you guys claim it or did they find it?

I just flew Alaska airlines with a white gas stove and 2 empty fuel bottles. I cleaned the crap out of stove and bottles for the flights to Alaska but just rinsed out the bottles before return flights and put them in a bag with my stinky underwear I wore for 13 days straight. No problems either way but I didn’t say anything about them being in there.

We fly with a Colman 2 burner stove every summer. No fuel of course. I’ve also flown around the world several times with a multifuel stove and the fuel bottle. Never had an issue. Like someone else said, I washed the fuel bottle before flying.

I fly with my gas stove every year. Remove it from the canister after use and let it air for a week. Put the stove in a sturdy plastic Ziploc bag. Pack it in the gear duffle and go. There's no reg preventing the stove from being flown. The main thing is get it clean and keep it bagged.

I've seen in theTSA regs, only new, unused stoves are allowed.

What? So a guy has to buy a new stove every year?

Looks like we will see some deals on Butane stoves in the classifieds.....

I took my whole camp to Alaska last year in one duffle;Optimus butane stove [its tiny], Portable wood stove, tipi- everything...no issues. I just bought butane canisters in Wasilla.

I have not read the regs for a year or so but it used to say washed out and no residue=but if they smell gas you are toast.

no I did not declare mine they found it. and they found my fuel tabs too and took them out. lucky I noticed and replaced them.
the next few trips I put the fuel tabs right on top in a plastic bag with some white candy in it. they let them go through.

I've seen in theTSA regs, only new, unused stoves are allowed.

This is directly from TSA.gov:
"Camp stoves
Carry On Bags: Yes (Special Instructions)
Checked Bags: Yes (Special Instructions)
Camp stoves are allowed in carry-on or checked bags only if they are empty of all fuel and cleaned so that no fuel vapors or residue remain. Please wrap cords and layer items in bags so officers can get a clear view of the items.

For more prohibited items, please go to the 'What Can I Bring?' page."

If I had received a ticket every time I had ever exceeded the speed limit, I would think twice about packing a previously used stove in my luggage. I would also make sure I had a plan B, but I doubt I would ever need it.

In addition to bagging my little stove in a Ziploc, I transport it in a stout waterproof duffle bag...the type that has a roll-down snorkel top and uses webbing/buckles to secure. I figure not much is going to sniff through that heavy wp duffle, and most agents aren't going to want the work of opening it up completely and then re-strapping it all closed. Of course that said, they'll probably do it this year when I fly, lol.

I have a coke can stove that uses denatured alcohol, i wonder if you can fly with a small bottle of denatured alcohol? in you checked bag?

Great link Gunnersdad....it runs down pretty much everything....I was a little surprised at some of the items on their list....if you fly its worth a look.

Interesting they will let you carry on your camp stove....and the tip about airing it out is a good one.

Link to some of the stuff TSA found for a week in time....folks really trying to bring guns and throwing knives on board a plane?
