I’m surprised states aren’t selling shed permits

Utah does this for Antelope Island.

I know people that pay for access to private land for sheds.

I can answer this from the perspective of why its so popular in Utah.

It is hard to draw tags, even for residents. I work with a kid that has 18 elk points and that affords him a 10% chance of drawing this year. Even general season deer is not a yearly thing anymore. Some of the southern units are 4-5 years for a general deer tag.

Shed hunting is something that they can do every year and it scratches the "hunting" itch. It is the same reason when someone draws LE elk or deer tag and they take the entire town with them. For most, its the only chance to go "hunting."

That makes me really appreciate my IA OTC deer tags. Geesh...

Never heard of any of those things. You obviously have, and are part of an overarching issue. Just delete the apps and don't look back. Super easy. Even easier if you never had them in the first place.

I've never heard of any of those but "Hushin". Those guys were on a couple episodes of THP which I really enjoy on Prime Video. The "lead" Hushin guy, don't recall his name, wounded a nice buck in MO and then left for a "prior engagement" before the search for his buck was even over. If I recall the THP guys spent 3 days and even hired a local blood tracking dog to find the buck. Unfortunately never recovered...

The "Hushin" guys were on another episode down in AZ Coues and Mule deer hunting. I wasn't impressed with them on that episode either. Definitely flat billed ear tuckers.

Absolutely. Easy for folks from the MW and East to assume that residents in the Western states have the same OTC priviliges we have. Lesson learned and that really sucks for you guys.

Not all western states are as bad as Utah and some do offer some good OTC opportunities to residents but we are watching those disappear yearly.

The only tag for big game that you can count on every year in Utah is archery any bull or archery spike/cow. Those are OTC unlimited. Everything else has some form of limit on number of tags.

Also, for the record, I love nonresidents and welcome them to come here but please understand why people struggle. We watch 10-25 percent of the tags go to them and we, as residents, cant draw a tag.

It has its benefits. The amount NRs pay for licenses and tags subsidizes resident tags. The cost of a resident OTC elk tag in Utah is 50 bucks. Deer tags are about the same. Nonresidents really do provide a large amount of funding.

We also need you donating to non profits like RMEF, MDF, MFF, etc. Those provide so much funding for habitat and studies. We need your voice when it comes to public land. We need you but it is hard.

That state is in serious trouble between the inevitable lawsuits likely stemming from the NR guys that have invested 20 years or more into points and potentially cutting NR elk/deer tags. I imagine the resident tags will have to go way up to make up for the lost revenue. I know none of my buddies are buying any more points in WY

It will hurt them and I would imagine there are a lot of people that will stop buying/applying.

The lawsuits wont come or wont stand. The state doesn't owe you anything for those points you bought and that is the risk you took.

This kind of thing reminds me of the Forrest Fenn treasure hunt bs all over again. Is the shed on public land? Is someone profiting? Do they have a permit from the governing land agency? What if someone dies or goes missing while looking for this shed?

Oh they can try and fight it...they just wont win. States have the right to set tag allocations and manage wildlife as they see fit. Applying for or purchasing points only gives you the opportunity to draw tag. It does not provide any form of guarantee. This is the risk that you take when you apply for tags or buy points. There really is no argument for a lawsuit but you can sue for whatever you want, its a matter of it stands.

If someone does try and sue it will only solidify the statement that "the only thing more selfish than a hunter is a hunter with points."
