I also have an issue with people being in winter range pushing animals around to get sheds.

Genius app though. You are compiling thousands of waypoints of areas where animals are shedding. After a few years you would have every hot spot dialed in and could clean house if you are greedy enough.

I have been told that us NRs are supposed to enjoy activities other than big game hunting on our western public lands. This would appear to fit that criteria.

Besides, this is just geo caching. People have been doing it for years.

Jokes on them. I put elk and deer waypoints where I think elk and deer should be hanging out. Turns out I'm wrong 99% of the time and too lazy to delete waypoints.

I can answer this from the perspective of why its so popular in Utah.

It is hard to draw tags, even for residents. I work with a kid that has 18 elk points and that affords him a 10% chance of drawing this year. Even general season deer is not a yearly thing anymore. Some of the southern units are 4-5 years for a general deer tag.

Shed hunting is something that they can do every year and it scratches the "hunting" itch. It is the same reason when someone draws LE elk or deer tag and they take the entire town with them. For most, its the only chance to go "hunting."

As a resident of Utah, I think its weird and I don't understand it. I get out and look for sheds each spring but its mostly just to get out and hike around in the woods. It is just something to do.

I know people that don't even hunt anymore, they just look for sheds each spring. Finding a set of 360 inch sheds gets you as much fame as killing a 360 bull. Its weird, its over blown but for some people, especially the younger crowd, it really is their only chance at hunting. Unfortunately, Utahans don't see it and keep asking to cut tags, which will only make it worse.

There are a multitude of other reasons for it as well, but that would take a couple days to get through.

Huge bummer what has happened to shed hunting. Used to be something I did for fun in high school in the spring. Now everyone is out there and there is no consideration just thoughts of "brown gold".

Poor Utah is getting hammered by not only its own residents but also its new best friends from Colorado.

I don't want to derail the thread but this is also true but not necessarily a bad thing. At its core, its the American dream. They took something they loved and found a way to make money at it.

Never heard of any of those things. You obviously have, and are part of an overarching issue. Just delete the apps and don't look back. Super easy. Even easier if you never had them in the first place.

I’m surprised states aren’t selling shed permits and preference points for the permits. Makes you wonder when someone will be offering fully guided shed hunts.
