My old man has a birthday coming up and was wanting a new flashlight to replace the old mag light he still keeps in his truck. Weight isn’t a concern but I want to get him a bright, quality light that will last (IE no Amazon chinesium). He’d be using it for chores/blood trailing/etc. not looking for a headlamp - just a hand held.

I’m a bit overwhelmed looking. I didnt realize there was a flashlight underground . Any suggestions for something at or under $100?

If you're after US made, Surefire is probably your best bet. I've been really happy with both Streamlight and Phoenix too.

Your in for a treat if you haven't looked at flashlights in a while. They have come a loong way. I have a key chain light that is better than my old heavy mag-light. Look at the ones that can take 3 aaa's or a 18650 lithium.

If he has some sort of cordless power tool set almost all of these manufactures offer handheld lights that use their batteries that are usually pretty nice.

Streamlight ProTac 2L. It’s my brothers cop light and he gave me one. Mine has a rechargeable battery. It is embarrassing bright. I used it to jog early dark mornings. It will light up a herd of deer in the distance. I used it to locate my dogs turd on a run and night blinded myself. I used a lesser light now.

On a hunt it’s so good. About $65 I think.

I highly recommend Coast headlamps and flashlights both. Never had any issues and been running mine for years. The headlamps are some of the best I’ve messed with but their flashlights are top notch

Started with a few LED Lensers. Then went to Nitecore which I have done a ton of different models in the last 5 years. Not because of failure but just trying new ones. Lately the flat in-pocket ones have been good, but I do wish I liked carrying a round one better because I like the 21700 (or 18650) batteries. Best thing about those is if the battery fails you are not out a whole light.

I recently tried a few Fenix lights, and like them too. I may slowly switch out to them. The PD36 looks awesome when I do.

I have tried a few Wuben lights. Their a little gimicky to me, at least the models I've used been given.

For an in truck (really any NON-EDC that's going to be on my person) I would get one with a 21700 battery and probably Fenix or Nitecore.

If a removable battery get a good charger too. They aren't much but are really nice over using the little USB-C port in the light itself that the 'cover' on gets worn off, or it terribly difficult to peel.

The flashlight world is kinda fun right now to geek out in.... But be warned it can be addicting!!
