Flakey buyers

I am not much of a hoarder and generally sell old gear to make room and money new stuff. I have been selling stuff on Craigslist and similar sites for many years. I am wondering if other people have noticed that buyers are more flakey these days, or if I just hit a bad stretch. I am to the point where I expect to be blown off and am surprised when a transaction actually goes through.

Frankly, I think buyers have acted goofy for years now – I don’t think it’s anything new. I believe now it’s just easier with so many selling venues for people to act as an interested buyer even if they don’t have true interest or the means to make the purchase. I try to not be bothered however because I now expect it. Also I try to realize that the next buyer that comes along may be legit and not pre-judge them because of all the other goofballs out there playing games.

I posted this after a guy said he was on the way to meet me and then went off the radar. I don’t get it.

I’ve had that happen a few times with local sales, but haven’t had many issues on here so far

I quit anticipating a long time ago on buyers except for these forums that show some accountable history of buyers and sellers.
If im buying the only issue that does come up is logistics and even then there’s some reputable shippers for oversized stuff.

People are nuts. I was selling a mini excavator last year. . A gentleman reached out asked all the right questions said he would pick it up Friday. I tell him great I’ll hold it for him. Friday comes along and says he doesn’t want to deal with traffic on Friday. I tell that’s fine. I don’t hear from him on Saturday. Monday a guy calls me brings a trailer and a check I sell it. The original guy calls that Wednesday. I tell him I sold it and he goes straight ballistic over the phone. Leaves me all sorts of bad reviews on line. Even tells me I’m a bad example for my kids.
After that I said the heck with selling stuff. The problem with online reviews is there one sided And some places don’t let you rebut it. ( that doesn’t effect everyone )
im not a online sales guy. I just sell our old equipment when we replace it with new.

That is annoying when you have people lined up wanting to buy something and the person who said they would buy it jerks you around. This last guy I was complaining about talked me down from my asking price. I told him if he could get the money in my hand before someone made me a better offer I would sell it to him. I am getting less patient with people.

I have bought and sold gear on a few forums over the years. Rokslide has the best people to deal with by far, but you still get some squirrels here and there. I'm usually selling pretty good stuff in good condition, but list it at the lower end of fair market value just to get it sold and be done. Would rather lose a couple bucks and make it quick and easy, than waste time going back and fourth with boneheads.

It’s not just buyers, but people in general. I don’t know why society is pushing lack of accountability so hard, seems like a poor strategy long term

On the buying and selling front, I hate selling stuff in general, but my interactions here have been great, no drama or flakes, which is nice… Craigslist is a cesspool anymore, last few things I sold there were not worth it, if it’s not hunting related, I just have my wife sell stuff on Facebook or wherever she sells stuff.

I have them meet me at the jail parking lot. If the recognize the address they are either a cop or have resided there in the past. It will weed out some of the past residents that I don’t care to do business with anyway.

FB Market place is a dumpster fire, I only use it under certain circumstance. I think its a result of being to easy to hit the contact button. People aren't shopping for an item, but see it and hit reply and waste a bunch of time before they get cold feet.
I use craigslist and ebay because at least a person has to be actively looking for what you're selling, seems to weed out some of the bone heads.
I also have developed a writing style that weeds out the tire kickers and the dreamers. I may only get a call or 2, but the guys that respond are in the market and get the idea not to screw around.
It has gotten worse the last few years though.
