I like the idea, but (1) No way I would trade elk hunting time for fishing

and

(2) No way I want that strong/pervasive smell of fried or cooked fish, fish oil or fish skin on me, or anywhere NEAR my camp or wafting through the air near my camp.

The last thing I need is to give a bear yet another reason to be curious and ask questions with his teeth or claws.

Cabela's has some decent 4 piece travel rods. My only suggestion would be to avoid those telescoping rods. Those fail consistently and feel terible. Just stick to a multi piece pack rod.
they also have a 6 piece rod that packs down to almost nothing.

I fish with bloody hands. (after I kill)

Unless it is hotter than heck and I got my midday nap in already and I'm waiting for it to cool down for the evening hunt. My favorite though is to hit the high mountain lakes during scouting season.

Easy to see the guys stricken by elk fever. I too have the fever, and like to cool the fever with cold mt water.
Of course I don’t have to travel far like you out of state guys.

I will be taking a pack rod instead of the two piece going forward.

I used to pack a 4 piece 9ft 5 wt. fly rod upwith me. This last year I picked up a Eagle clsw 7'6" combination rod. It allows me to bothbspin and fly fish. For $70.00 it is a good rod. I used it while scouting and dping s little bird hunting. I agree it woulf be hsrdcto go fishing while chasing elk during archery season.

Sometime will throw my 5wt fenwick, a book of a few flys, and reel in my pack. But summer is for fish. Fall is for big game winter is for ice fishing. Spring is time to recover (and maybe look for bear).

I never fished on an elk hunt but I wouldn't dream of going on a moose hunt without a fishing rod. I'll either bring a 4 piece 5 weight fly rod or a 4 piece travel spin rod with a 100 or 1500 reel.

It would depend on what water you plan on fishing. If a small creek river, I would take a tenkara, no reel and very minimal weight and accessories needed. If it was a high mountain lake or larger river, a fly rod or ultra light spinning rod. Some times I would much rather fish then hunt anymore. And having a “ rod” can help put dinner on, and entertainment.

Another vote for tenkara if you’re just fishing small streams. My setup only weighs an ounce (really), folds from 10” out to 11’. The only other thing you really need to bring is a few flies and tippet. I’ve caught some nice cutthroats on it and it’s a lot more fun than a traditional setup.

Not cheap for what it is but there is about a zero weight and space cost to be able to fish in the chance you have the time. Tenkara Rod Co usually does pretty good Black Friday sales as I recall, so now would be the time to look for deals.
