Fishing while on an Elk Hunt

Does anyone here have an recommendations of a small backpacking rod/reel combo that I could pack into camp? Any tips suggestions?

Would be nice to catch and eat a couple fish while out there

Anything will really work, I wouldn’t spend a lot of money on it. I pack a way too expensive fly rod, but that is one of my other passions. Pick up a cheap pack kit and just check to make sure the line is decent.

Cabela's has some decent 4 piece travel rods. My only suggestion would be to avoid those telescoping rods. Those fail consistently and feel terible. Just stick to a multi piece pack rod.

If you are just wanting to supplement with some brook trout out of creeks, bring 10' of line and a couple hooks. You can make a quick willow rod for creek fishing and you won't be carrying any weight or bulk. I have done this many times - works great.

I have always wanted to try tenkara but cant ever bring myself to spend the money. I have on numerous occasions used the old willow stick trick. I carry some 10lb spider wire and some hooks. Roll over a rock or 2 until you find something a fish would eat and your in business.

Agree with above-but I wouldn’t go in the field with any combo I haven’t replaced the line with.
Those combos always come with junk line. I’d go with some P-line flouroclear in 6lb test

Or grab a packable 5'6" spin rod and throw a cheap Shimano, Diawa, or one of the new cheap spin reels (KastKing) with 4lb test.

All told I wouldn't spend too much time thinking about it... I've worked with fish for 20-some years and always bring fishing gear to the hunt... but never end up using it! Always wind up butchering or helping a buddy fill a tag before I'm on the stream bank. But it's a fine idea. Guy above is spot on with the small spinners.

P-line is the bomb... Also look at some of the braid and go with a 3' flouro leader (google alberto knot for the connector). I've got way too many rods and find myself moving towards braid for nearly everything except my salmon rods (stretch is good in some cases).

I've got a cheap Cabela's 7-piece fly rod that I'll pack sometimes. But in some units I take my normal 9' rod and take off from base camp to fish the rivers mid day during early September.

Thanks for all of the feedback. Didn't draw the unit I hunted the previous two years and will be headed OTC. Place we're looking at his a nice creek/stream and I wouldn't mind supplementing the mountain house lol

LOVE my one ounce Tenkara pole for backpack hunting/fishing.
However, some people (fly fishermen) take offense to it apparently.
Was in a fly shop in Bozeman and asked the guys behind the counter
if they ever dealt with any Tenkara stuff. Thought the guys head was
gonna explode. "Triggered" him to say the least. He said "that's not fly fishing".
Whatever dude, they work great for small water stuff.

Seriously...I've brought my pole every year but with only 5 days of hunting time on average it never gets used...always figured if I tagged out early but that only creates even more work to do

If a good buck walks in front of me and wants to commit suicide, I will accommodate him, but I don't hunt them or even give chase. As for fish, it is out o the question. If I am just out camping, fishing is fine, but when I am elk hunting I stay laser focused. If in the end I go home skunked, it was not because I spent valuable time on some distraction. Just me.

As a few others have said, look into a Tenkara set up. You can have the entire set weight just a few ounces. I brought one elk hunting before I ever used it and ended up catching a decent trout (about 10") in the first few casts just trying to get the hang of the rod. It was a high mountain lake with very little pressure though.
